Free Republic "Bump List" Register
Posted on 09/30/2001 4:46:44 AM PDT by John Robinson
I have created a public register of "bump lists" here on Free Republic. I define a bump list as a name listed in the "To" field used to index articles.

The problem is with the way FR does self-search. Too much data, and the very popular (10% of the time) self-search takes way to long to complete.

A better solution might be to make the lists something special, give them a profile page and automatically bookmark all threads that people flag (and not allow for double-bookmarking). You could keep all bookmarks for X number of days (maybe 30 or so), if people spam the lists, you could treat it like any other kind of disruption.
The lists could also be given a separate, permanent set of bookmarks for very important articles the listkeepers want to keep for a long time (this bookmark list would function exactly like the regular bookmarks on peoples' profiles).

Will we be able to "sign up" for lists and get the bumps to the lists in our self search in the final version?
A modest proposal: lists for each of the locations that have flags availiable for profile pages, which would bump everyone flying that flag. For example, Illinois_list would bump me and everyone else listing Illinois.

Pappy smears?

Abrahamites??
That would move you to the top of the list.!

How about this as a category: Enviralists
Enviralists >covering the enviro whackos and their plots to cleanse America of Americans! As an example stupid ESA rules, Protecting Salmon over humans, Trees more important than logging families!

This would be really cool, if done right.
The other thing I think would be neat is if, when we hit reply and the reply box comes up, if we could click on the html code (i.e., < p >) and it was simply inserted in the box, instead of having to type it.
Yes, there will be a friends list. It will be private to your account--others will not be able to use it. Not only will you be able to flag your friends to forum posts, you will also be able to mass mail your friends. There will also be a public list, which is what these bump lists here will transform into.
Very cool.
I'm mostly using this bump list register to catch nonexistent users. Soon, only existing screen names, or names of bump lists, will be allowable in the TO field of replies.
Dang, you mean I wont have to wade through posts to
WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!!!!.! and the like anymore.
O darn.

This is the great news. Found it a huge pain to bump everyone on my list when I did the Tax Cut threads. Not to mention I lost my Bush Bump list and had to try to redo it from memory which didn't work all that well!
Thanks for all the neat changes!
To: John Robinson
I'm still confused as to how we get notified when the ''bang list'' for example is alerted. Are we suppose to do a search for the ''bang list'' a few times a day to find the ''bang list'' alerts? Thanks!

Mmm...bumplist...me like.
I can't wait to see your next version of forum software. It's sounds cool from your hints. I have the feeling you're moving to a stronger structure but preparing for better efficiency and more features, a foundation for future growth. Any idea of when you'll deploy it? Need any beta testers?
Would you consider adding a <DIV class=article> tag to articles in the forum for those of us working with custom style sheets? Just asking...
I've been giving some thought to a Javascript/VBscript configuration page for the new style sheets so that any novice could configure their own. I won't bother if you're already working on something or if you're just planning a gallery of sheets from which people can choose. My idea would be a single HTML page they can download and then select their wallpapers and fonts and such easily and test them on a fake FR post to see the results before uploading the generated sheet back to FR. A WYSIWYG style sheet utility.
Could you start a FR_Forum_Update list or some such? I'd like to keep track of what you're doing with the software.

Did you see this? When you read this, can you explain it to me, LOL.
