Three judges put on the bench by governors of three political parties will hear the highly charged election lawsuit that stands between Minnesota and its second U.S. senator. The panel named Monday by the state's highest court will preside over a Republican Norm Coleman's court case that seeks to overturn Democrat Al Franken's 225-vote advantage following a long recount. The case is expected to take months to resolve. The three district judges are:

Democrat Frank Lautenberg, seeking a fifth term in the U.S. Senate, can breathe a little easier this month. The incumbent leads Republican challenger Dick Zimmer 49% to 36% in the latest Rasmussen reports telephone survey in New Jersey. When “leaners” are included, Lautenberg leads the Republican 50% to 37%. Last month, the two candidates were virtual tied, with Lautenberg on top by just a single percentage point. That poll was taken just days after Lautenberg survived a primary challenge that raised questions about whether he was too old to serve. Still, while the new poll provides better news for the...

Cannon leading Jacob Getting supporters to polls may be key to election Copyright 2006 Deseret Morning News By Bob Bernick Jr. Deseret Morning News Rep. Chris Cannon holds a good lead over fellow Republican John Jacob in the 3rd Congressional District as Tuesday's primary approaches, a new Deseret Morning News/KSL-TV poll shows. But when pollster Dan Jones & Associates breaks out those most interested in the election and hard-core GOP voters, the race tightens consider- ably. Jones polled 617 registered 3rd District voters from Monday to Thursday. Among all the voters, Cannon leads 46 percent to 33 percent. Still, whether...

There's been a lot of vitriol hurled at both Democrats and Republicans this election, but I'd like to focus on one party that has, until this point, largely escaped some richly deserved criticism. The voters. That's right, the precious American voters: Sacred stewards of democracy. You don't have to spin around in an election cycle for long to discover that a shocking number of voters are in fact gullible, greedy, oblivious to facts, or simply fundamentally retarded. However, three types of voters deserve special mention for taking their constitutionally guaranteed right to vote, and essentially wiping their with it. Let's...

The U.S. attorney for the northern district of Indiana is being asked to investigate an alleged incident of voter fraud. The name of a man who died more than three years ago has shown up on paperwork requesting a mailed absentee ballot. The man's name is Stanley Grygiel. He was a staunch democrat, a UAW member and somewhat politically active. Up until now, it appeared that activity ended when he died in June of 2001.Mail from the Democratic Party still occasionally shows up at the home of the late Grygiel, according to a son who still lives there. The son expressed...

CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo. -- The congressional candidates' debate was supposed to be about foreign policy and the economy, but Democrat John Salazar started off by offering a farming tip. "Being a potato farmer, I've learned that if you want to increase your harvest, you have to rotate your crops from time to time," the plain-spoken Salazar said. "Well, now it's time for Colorado to rotate its congressional crop, so we can get more of a harvest out of our representatives." For most of the United States, there is almost no rotation of the political crop anymore in elections for the...

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 - Congressional Republicans are poised to hold or to slightly expand their majorities in the House and Senate this November, though Senate Democrats retain an outside chance of slipping back into control. As they analyze the House contests, most lawmakers, strategists and independent handicappers see little opportunity for Democrats in the House to gain the dozen seats they need to capture the majority, given the small field of competitive races being run on issues ranging from a candidate's business history to old tax votes. Democratic leaders reject that view. In the Senate, where Republicans hold a51-49 majority,...

RICHMOND, Va. (Aug. 31) - Republicans selected state Del. Thelma Drake Tuesday to replace U.S. Rep. Edward L. Schrock on the November ballot, a day after he dropped out of the race amid claims that he is gay. The Republican Committee for Schrock's district gathered Tuesday to hastily vote for a nominee who could take on Democrat lawyer David B. Ashe in the Nov. 2 election. Drake, a real estate agent, is a reliable member of the state House's conservative GOP majority. Schrock, 63, a married retired Navy captain who was popular among conservatives, cited unspecified ''allegations'' for his surprise...

Alright, I've been tasked with the unusual-but very solemn-obligation of reporting back to FreeRepublic Land on the progress of Paul's campaign to unseat that noxious, vile, contemptible, harridan of a congresswoman, Nydia Velasquez; she of the twelfth congressional district, representing constituents in New York County. And Queens County. And Kings County.I know, I feel for all you people who happen to live in that general vicinity. Now, you freepers perusing this thread are by this point, probably asking yourselves-quite reasonably, in my estimation-why the Paul Rodriguez campaign would entrust such an important duty to such a complete and utter numbskull....

Proposal to Have U.N. Monitor Elections Ends in Partisan Clash By Dan Morgan House Republicans view a recent move by 11 Democrats to have United Nations observers monitor U.S. elections as a politically motivated stunt, and last week they moved to nip the idea in the bud. But after an unusually rancorous skirmish that brought proceedings on the House floor to a standstill late Thursday, the issue may have received more publicity than even Democrats hoped for. It pitted Rep. Steve Buyer (R-Ind.), author of an amendment to the 2005 foreign aid bill aimed at blocking U.N. involvement in U.S....

Last week I drove down Possumtrot Road, deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It's in Yancey County, one of the most rural and least populated of North Carolina's 100 counties. Possumtrot Road is at an altitude of about 2,800 feet, but it is lined on both sides with rich bottom land. Much of that land lies fallow; many of the barns are falling to wrack and ruin. And thereon hangs a tale. First, a touch of geology. The Blue Ridge is the southern section of the Appalachian Chain, formed about 250 million years ago when the tectonic plate that is...

Top-rated TV star Kelsey Grammer announced Monday night that he would like to quit show business and enter politics - perhaps as Senator from California. "I've always thought that since I did not serve in the military and since I was raised by a military man, my grandfather, that we all have an obligation to try to perform some service to the country," the "Frasier" star told Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes." "And the only thing I can think of is to attempt maybe a political office at some point in my life," Grammer added. When it came to...
