THE BRIEF - Republican Byron Donalds defeated David Jolly on Tuesday to win the Florida governor's race. - Donalds will succeed outgoing Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was ineligible to run for a third term.
Byron Donalds was elected to be Florida's next governor on Tuesday night, defeating David Jolly.
Donalds, a congressman from southwest Florida, won the Republican nomination with President Donald Trump’s backing.
The backstory:
Byron Donalds was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2016 and served two terms. In 2020, he was elected to the U.S. Congress to represent Florida's 19th congressional district.
Once in Congress, Donalds became a regular on conservative television, a leading voice in the House Freedom Caucus and a prominent critic of Democratic policies. He became known for his outspoken positions on immigration, cultural issues and race.
By 2023, Donalds had become a national conservative figure. His populist colleagues nominated him for speaker of the House, and he emerged as a prominent surrogate for Trump.
In May 2026, President Donald Trump endorsed Donalds at a rally in The Villages: "This guy's gonna be a great governor."
Trump's endorsement gave him the backing of the president in a state with approximately 1.5 million more registered Republicans than Democrats.
What's next: Donalds will be sworn in as Florida’s 47th governor on January 5, 2027.

Little sliver of good news.
This proves Florida is racist…..er…wait a minute! Never mind…
Gov Donalds
Great! That wasn’t what I heard earlier.
Jolly the whackjob won some counties which was frightening!
Good on Florida!
Donalds scraped by with a 1.4 point lead over Jolly in a state that DeSantis won by 20 points a mere four years ago.
But a win is a win, I suppose.
Thank Heaven.
If Florida a great state or what! Congrats to gov elect Donalds 👍👍👍
A lesson not to take anything political for granted.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —
Florida voters on Tuesday approved Amendment 3, which raises the homestead exemption from non-school property taxes and halves the annual cap on assessment increases for rentals, second homes, and commercial property.
With 98% of Florida’s precincts reporting, the measure cleared the 60% threshold with 62% of the vote as of 9:45 p.m. The Amendment will raise the homestead exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 starting in 2027, and to $250,000 in 2028.
Amendment 3 has drawn concerns across the state, one of which is that local governments will have to address the funding gaps for emergency services, which rely on local property taxes.
At last! Some good news! Yippee!
Florida must have an excellent reporting system. Michigan drags it’s butt so it can cheat. Having a dishonest SoS running for governor does NOT help
Its, not it’s
