After graduating with master’s degree in mechanical engineering from University of Iowa, I was hired by a large manufacturing company in Chicago. Started out as a draftsman, quickly promoted due to performance and knowledge of mechanical engineering plus computer programming, a rare combination in 1962. After developing expert software to design our product which was custom designed machines for mass production, I was asked to computerize manufacturing department. Our machines were custom designed to satisfy customer specs from GM, Ford, Chrysler, Grumman aircraft, Whirlpool, and bunch of others in USA. So, each machine designed and build by my outfit was different size. I was able to develop expert software which could machine, or flame cut machine parts simply by defining the raw material size and finished part dimensions, using numerical controlled manufacturing machines. It was a total revolution, increasing productivity in shop by orders of magnitude. After working there for quarter of a century, although I had lifetime secure job, I was burned out and accepted an offer from a national research lab funded by Department of Energy. It was a great way to ease into retirement. Total 37 years of working full time jobs plus consulting on side made it possible to retire early and play golf full time at Royal Oaks country club in Washington state. It was the best decision to improve my health, and I really enjoyed golf at the club. Republican voter since Nixon in 1972. Came to USA on student visa, naturalized US citizen since 1970.
