Idaho voters defeated a ballot measure that pro-life advocates said would have legalized abortions up to birth, eliminated parental consent requirements and opened the door to taxpayer funding of abortions.
With 77% of precincts reporting, Proposition 1 was trailing 53.8% to 46.2%, according to unofficial results. The citizen-initiated statute, known as the Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act, sought to create a right to “reproductive freedom and privacy” that included a so-called right to kill babies in abortions up to birth.
Pro-life leaders described the measure as one of the most extreme of the 2026 election cycle.
Blaine Conzatti, president of the Idaho Family Policy Center, said a woman “would be able to get an elective abortion for any reason at all, up to at eight months of pregnancy.” He added that it would “gut all sorts of protections that we currently have on the books here in Idaho for parents as well as patient protections for the pregnant woman, like ensuring that a physician performs the abortion,” and that it would “open the door for taxpayer funding of abortion once again here in Idaho.”
Seventy-nine Idaho physicians, including obstetricians, neonatologists and family practitioners, signed an open letter opposing the measure.
They wrote that Proposition 1 “is extreme, deceptive, and medically unsafe” and “does not protect women; it endangers them and strips parents of their rights while expanding late-term abortion.” The doctors noted that current Idaho law “explicitly allows abortion when a physician, in their good-faith medical judgment, determines it is necessary to prevent the mother’s death — including in cases of ectopic pregnancy and placental abruption,” and that “the Idaho Supreme Court has affirmed the wide latitude given to physicians.”
Carol Tobias, president of the National Right to Life Committee, said Proposition 1 “endangers the lives of women and preborn babies for a whole host of reasons,” particularly by potentially eliminating parental consent so that a 14-year-old daughter could face “an unexpected pregnancy and making a life-changing decision without your ability to be support her.” She noted that similar measures in other states have led to successful lawsuits that struck down protective laws.
Idaho’s existing statutes protect unborn children nearly from conception through a heartbeat law that creates civil liability for abortions after roughly 18 days post-conception and a Defense of Life Act that imposes criminal penalties after about 14 days, with clear exceptions for the life of the mother and for reported cases of rape or incest in the first trimester. State data showed a 99.7% reduction in the abortion rate after those laws took effect.
Opponents of Proposition 1, including the Idaho Family Policy Center and Right to Life of Idaho, argued that claims of restricted emergency care were false and that physicians had confirmed the laws provided sufficient clarity. The measure’s defeat preserves Idaho’s status as one of the most protective states for unborn children.

Finally some good news out of this election
THANK YOU JESUS
They estimated 700,000 people voted. So far the votes reported are around 600,000. The No vote leads the yes by around 40,000. I ain’t comfortable yet. I’ll just sit here in the SE and see if the Boise area screws this up
I can’t believe this even happened, that this even became a bill to vote on in the first place. Idaho is a very Red state. You all must have some serious enemies with in for this to boil up and rear it’s ugly head.
Yep.
Yup.
Out of state money and transplants from CA. Plus some really greedy locals. Hell look at Texas. None of it is good.
The California transplants are about 70% conservative.
In your opinion. The out of state money coming in is a much bigger problem in my opinion. We will have to agree to disagree.
Only one of the major donors is a California transplant and she’s some wealthy Ketchum resident with more money than sense. The majority are longtime Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, and East Coast liberals. I know it’s popular to blame California transplants, but en masse they are far more conservative than native Idahoans.
Not an opinion, it’s a fact.
Not an opinion, it’s a fact.
Everyone that I know that has come in from California is a conservative. Most of the libs are coming out of Boise which was liberal long before the influx of California refugees. The Yes on 1 money was coming in from dark blue states. Idaho is still the most conservative state in the Union. Every statewide election was won by a republican. Abortion was defeated 56% to 45%.
Praise God that Idaho values prevailed here.
Each to his own as thing go.
A last thought on this for you. Right or wrong I’m still smiling and happy the Idaho citizens turned out to shut prop 1 down. It took a lot of time and effort from a lot of people to get the Vote No message out. Those who haven’t been born deserve a chance at life. Godspeed to them and everyone who stopped This thing tonite. Be safe
Every state has its own contingent of Molech worshipers, and it doesn’t take a lot of voters to get these amendments on the ballot. The process is in the state constitution, and was intended for good. It was used for evil in this instance.
Idaho defeated it but Virginia passed it.
Massachusetts, believe it or not, has collected twice ad many signatures as is necessary to block Maura Healey’s 3rd trimester clinic abortion law until 2028.
Unfortunately, just the opposite result in VA
This should’ve lost be 70% to 30%. The lefties have been very busy spending money in this state.
