ACTS of the APOSTLES
Chapter 12, Verses 1-11
It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.
So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.
Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.
Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”

And Can It Be, That I Should Gain?
Charles Wesley (1738)
1 And can it be that I should gain
An int'rest in the Savior's blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me!
2 'Tis mystery all! Th'Immortal dies!
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine!
'Tis mercy all! let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me!
3 He left His Father's throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam's helpless race;
'Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me!4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature's night;
Thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free;
I rose, went forth and followed Thee.
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me!
5 No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th'eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me!
Amen.Sing Joyfully

The Murillo is beautiful. Thanks, Dan.
Why is Peter typically portrayed as a bald headed, very old guy?
While he may have been bald, he was not that old...........
As always: My pleasure, Alba.
No idea.
According to church tradition and Wiki, he died in Rome sometime in 64 - 68 AD, and was probably about the same in age.
So when he ‘escaped’ would have been mid 30’s or so.............
Sounds about right.................
Has to be, because if he was ‘old’ when he was imprisoned, not long after the Crucifixion, then he would have been nearly 100 when he died...................
There you go, using that “logic” stuff again.
Use it or lose it!...........................
Probably because might be how people prefer to thi k of authority figures, older and ful, of wisdom, and the artists likely knew this and displayed it as such to appeal to viewers sense of authority figures. Even back then older folks didn’t really like being under the authority of younger whippersnappers I soild imagine (which was why it was astonishing when Jesus was young and teaching the teachers)
I imagine it was Just artistic liscence.
Good Morning, Dan! :-)
Once, I had a mouse get caught in the refrigerator's condenser fan, so you have my sympathy today.
Eyew.
