27:57-66 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb. The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.” “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard. | 15:42-47 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid. | 23:50-56 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen clothand placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. | 19:38-42 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. |

Caravaggio (#14) chose a dark background for his painting, no distraction of landscape or architecture for us, we focus solely on the group of figure, we are also involved in this sad event. They seem to be lit by a spotlight or by the divine light of God. MM supports Jesus’ mother while another Mary lifts her hands to the sky in despair. The man on the left (John?), while supporting the body of Jesus, has his fingers inside or touching the wound inflicted by the soldier. Nicodemus looks straight at the viewer, his face and eyes reflecting our own emotions.
Of note, Tissot, Raphael, Bloch, Dore, Rubens.
The tomb would have been dark. Don’t know why you’re so confident in identifying Nicodemus. Rather than the other male being John, my money would be on Joseph of Arimathea, whose tomb it was and whom Scripture specifically credits.
You might be very right. I think Nicodemus stuck in my mind from some literature I read a long time ago. I just checked on Wikipedia and they identify him as Nicodemus with the face of Caravaggio himself. Wouldn’t Joseph of Arimathea have been old?
Because he already owned a tomb? Actually, I’ve always imagined both as at least middle-aged, because of their membership in the Sanhedrin.
Not because he owned a tomb, I have always pictured Joseph as an old man. Who knows.
Th3 first painting really struck me. Fantas5ic composition- done, it looks like, on the golden spiral composition.. the eye seems to flow around the painting easily,, in a spiral pattern.. nice color combos too,, nice clean looking painting. too many good paintings a d powerhouse artists to comment on this time. The marble work is realy something too.
In case you wondered: I could play a little joke and refrain from posting during the next two days, while Jesus lies entombed. But that seems silly, so I’m planning to resume on Monday.
Good morning, Dan. (Is it still morning there?)
1:06 pm, silly!
Been on the road all morning. Put over 100 miles on the Bike.
Just me and the Lord.
I haven’t even looked at the time.
Good for you. Either your bass-playing worship tomorrow morning will be especially inspired, or it will seem unexceptional but a spiritual crisis will have been averted or reduced.

I am surprised (not really) that the Renaissance artists were not more familiar with Jewish burial practices of the first century.
Jesus body would have been wrapped, as in the ‘Shroud of Turin’, and then be anointed with olive oil, spices and herbs and wrapped again, tightly, so that the spices would be pressed up close to the flesh.
Not a sprinkling of spices and herbs, but a huge bagful like a sheet full!...
John 19:39
He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. [Or about 34 kilograms]
Also his rabbinical vestments would have been buried along with him, the white head shawl with the blue stripes and fringes. It is these that are mentioned in John 20...
7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.
I’ve long been aware of what Nico and Joey did late on Friday. What has always puzzled me is what more, given what had already been done, the women were planning to do on Sunday morning.
Scanning through the images what struck me was how much work it took to 1) take down Jesus body. Say 150-170 pounds. 2. Wrap it in linen with 75 pounds of spices. 3) Carry it to the tomb. The Garden Tomb is about 200 yard away from Golgotha. You have to go down the ravine and then back up. I assume they’re following a footpath.
It’s not clear if they prepared the body for burial at the cross or in the garden. I re-read John and all it says is “he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[e] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs”.
I would prepare the body with spices and wrap it first, so it’d be easier to carry. Otherwise, you have two heavy bundles: Jesus and the spices.
Joseph and Nicodemus were men who were cited and perhaps John helped, although he did not say that. Still, even with two men, carrying a 225 pound to 250 pound burden while rushing to keep the sabbath is not an easy task.
“I’ve long been aware of what Nico and Joey did late on Friday. What has always puzzled me is what more, given what had already been done, the women were planning to do on Sunday morning.”
Yes, I’ve wondered that as well. Having meditated on it on and off for perhaps 20 years, perhaps it’s as simple as they wanted to add their layer of spices to what was already there to honor Jesus. Rather like laying flowers at a grave site.
The women’s actions were very planned and determined from the evening of burial. They watched the men prepare the body. They rested on the Sabbath and they bought the spices and prepared them. Very likely, they thought the men didn’t know how to do it properly. What wasn’t planned was how to open the tomb.
There is nothing wrong with gilding the lily.
