MATTHEW, Chapter 1
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Good Morning, Dan.
I had no idea there were so many pieces of art for this particular Biblical Event.
Oddly enough, ONLY Tissot took the time, place, and culture of 1st-Century Judea into consideration.
All the others reflect the costumes, architecture, and climate of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods of Europe.
Oh well, I guess artists can only paint what they know.
I trust that James was a believer, as is obviously revealed in his artistic devotion to Jesus, and that he is receiving his eternal reward for such wholeheartedness.
I’m missing a cultural reference.
Images 15, 20, 25, 26 and 40 feature broken sticks, in 15, 20, 25 and 40 being broken across a knee, in 26 under a foot or in the air, and the ground is littered with broken sticks.
Where is this customary, and what is the significance, just a symbol of a break with the past, or what?
Anyone?
I missed the stick being broken across a thing in #11.
thing=thigh. Thanks, Otto Kor Wrecked, now go away.
Was and am also puzzled. Just searched “broken stick at wedding” and got back zilch.
A good inference. Another might be, more specifically, the end of their virginity. So very many of these works were entitled "The Marriage of the Virgin," even though there was no consummation until after Jesus' birth. So, if ever there was a wedding that deserved such a custom, this wasn't it!
A third possibility is as a symbol of Jesus' future self-sacrificial death, which of course would make this specific to this event and therefore not a "custom" at all.
I agree about the background architecture and many of the costumes. The Tissot is the only one showing the couple under the traditional chuppah wedding canopy.
However, I did notice an important detail from Exodus and Samuel about the vestments of the priest or rabbi: he is wearing the sacred garment called an ephod in paintings 1, 2, 13, 23, 30, 34, and 39. The clearest example is #13. It is an apron-like garment to be worn over the priest's robes, having a panel of twelve precious stones, signifying the twelve tribes of Israel.
I also notice that Joseph is carrying a stick with flowers or herbs tied to the top of it in several of the paintings. This is a Jewish custom observed to this day in certain Orthodox celebrations. Fragrant leaves and flowers are used. A freeper explained it to me once, and I wish I could remember which holiday was pictured that made me inquire about it.
It seems the stick, or rod, represents eligible suitors - you'll notice all the stick-breaking (even bending) is on Joseph's side.
It may be from an apocryphal legend, where all the bachelors lay their sticks on the altar, and the Holy Spirit 'chooses' which one is to wed Mary - and causes that man's stick to bloom.
(as in several of the paintings, Joseph does have a blooming stick)
P.S. That analysis was of Raphael's painting.
P.P.S. I miss eta. If anyone knows, eta would.
Amen! :-)
I noticed the High Priest’s garments as well. One wonders if a Carpenter from Nazareth would have the High Priest officiate at his wedding, though.
Artistic License?
I was curious about that: wasn’t the High Priest the only one authorized to wear the twelve stones?
Also #27 has the ‘proposal stick’ being bent, and 38 & 32 (are the same) - showing it breaking.
I suppose the losing suitors are renouncing any future claims. Can't help it, makes me laugh: there were two suitors whom I beat out for my wife's hand. Been laughing about it ever since. Hope they each found the right one for them, like I did.
On Mary's side in 15.
I did check to see if it was always on the same side, hoping that would give me some insight...
And I totally missed Joseph’s staff in bloom in most of the images.
Not like it was glaringly obvious, or anything!
Artistic License?
I half expected at least one priest to be wearing a cross...
The similarly between the Perugino and the Raphael jumped out at me I looked it up and Raphael was a student of Perugino. Michelangelo also told Perugino to his face that he was a “goffo nell arte” a bungler in art. Sounds like the makings of a reality tv show “Real Painters of The Italian Renaissance “. Thanks for the post.
