1 When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relationship to the Lord, she came to test Solomon with hard questions. 2 Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravan—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind. 3 Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her. 4 When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built, 5 the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at the temple of the Lord, she was overwhelmed.

6 She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. 7 But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard. 8 How happy your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! 9 Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he has made you king to maintain justice and righteousness.”

10 And she gave the king 120 talents of gold, large quantities of spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

11 (Hiram’s ships brought gold from Ophir; and from there they brought great cargoes of almugwood and precious stones. 12 The king used the almugwood to make supports for the temple of the Lord and for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. So much almugwood has never been imported or seen since that day.)

13 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for, besides what he had given her out of his royal bounty. Then she left and returned with her retinue to her own country.

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA

A r t
Q u a l i t y
The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art: this is The Bible in Paintings, not “Great Paintings” nor even “Good Paintings.” So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don’t need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby’s. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm asking the Holy Spirit to guide. Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.

P a c i n g
The pace here may seem appallingly snail-like to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic; but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here. The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing—this is His project, after all. Always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!

T e x t
S e q u e n c i n g
The Protestant Canon does not (for several reasons) follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I will treat synoptically. Now, onward!

. .

Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so I’m just having fun here—I hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.

At the Holy Spirit's prompting, I am surveying "Bible art" to give God glory, as many of these artists have done, and for my own amusement and learning; and I thought others might enjoy it and be blessed by it, too. My plan is to proceed methodically from left-to-right, Genesis to Revelation, as the Lord wills. Back soon with another.

The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!

But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is being filmed right now. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year’s viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Here is the Official Trailer.

Here is a link for free viewing of The Chosen: “Works with your phone, tablet, and you can cast to your Roku or Chromecast.” Last fall I paid $34.98 for DVDs and ongoing internet access—best 35 bucks I’ve ever spent (I don’t recall how much our marriage license cost, but then it was 43 years ago).

Hebrews 11:6 has been gracious enough to allow me to hijack one of his threads just a little bit.

I'm curious to know which version of The Bible FReepers regard as the "best".

Best is, of course subjective, your criteria may be different than your neighbors. Perhaps you weigh ease of reading which captures the spirit, over Archaic Latin, or original Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic?

Your call. What do you think of as "best"?

I don't want to start a heavy debate on this or any thread, I just want to know which version you favor. Your favorite is all I need, so please don't post your answer, but FReepmail me.

Thanks!

My pleasure entirely, Tom. By the way, I learned some helpful HTML table graphics by examining one of your post’s Page Source and then experimenting, which I put to good use in a very modest way—so thanks for being an excellent example! But I also looked at your incredibly complex posts on Mary-Lou’s threads, and I concluded quickly that I’m very glad I don’t need to employ that level of effort or ingenuity.

nully, I got nothing to argue about as if 68 years on this earth hasn't taught me - these threads of art sure bring my mind closer to how little I really understand!

I mean, 2 prostitutes appear before Solomon for a judgement? Really? Imagine 2 streetwalkers having a meeting with, let's say...Trump. Really?

God's work = mysterious ways! Why prostitutes? Could God have shown us how wise Solomon was w/out prostitutes? Why are they notable?

(How little I know!)

Then there's the guy who gets killed because he lied (about killing Saul)...

Man, there's a LOT of death, death of armies, priests, armies of priests!

All that death. God-ordained death.

Makes me want to be quiet, and small. Inside.

It's the KJV for me
because I love its poetry :)

Favorite? Probably New King James. I’ve had one for over 30 years. Before that, I used KJV.

NIV will do, but I don’t trust its fidelity to the original text. Also, it tends to favor textual variants instead of the Received Text.

I try a new translation every year for my daily
Bible readings. I’m using World English Bible this year. It’s clear, but not as accurate as NKJ. Next year I’ll try the NASB.

Oh, and then there's these 'little wisdoms' tucked in the margins...say for instance Psalm 1 v.2:

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

looking in the margin, for "meditate" it explains:
"...to ponder while talking to oneself."

How great is that! Finally! "Permission" from God to talk to myself!

Well, I had hoped that 101 images on this single subject over three days constitutes more than scratching the surface, but I'll take your word for it, Debbie.

Like you, I am amazed every day at how many artists have chosen to illustrate the Word, and present-day artists still are cranking them out--albeit generally in a different style than the Renaissance bunch. Many Bible passages just don't inherently lend themselves to visual portrayal, but those that do all seem to have received close attention.

You and me both, although as an agnostic, I probably know even less that you!

If I may speculate? Why two prostitutes? Because none of us, no matter how low are too low to be heard by The King?

Or in another viewpoint, none of us are beyond redemption?

Because I don't want this to turn into a fistfight over whose version is "better" on a thread Hebrews 11:6 was kind enough to let me use to conduct a survey.

There are rankings available on line, but I want to see what FReepers think, because I think more of FReepers than I do of random strangers!

I'm just going to count votes, not take names!

As an agnostic you evidence a curious interest in this topic. Literally all of the orthodox, non-cultic versions vividly explain the truth of the Gospel’s basic claims: that Jesus, fully God and fully human, died for our sins and rose again. I know you well enough now, Dean, to inquire: What’s going on?

Just because someone doesn’t experience faith doesn’t mean they don’t want to believe.

Being an agnostic is a very uncomfortable position for one who wants some sense of certainty in an uncertain world.

In the meanwhile, I have accepted Pascal’s wager.

As for this particular exercise, I will fill you in on the details when it’s no longer in stealth mode, or when you sign the NDA.
