When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines. Their dead were strewn along the road. 53 When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines, they plundered their camp.

54 David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem; he put the Philistine’s weapons in his own tent.

55 As Saul watched David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is that young man?”

Abner replied, “As surely as you live, Your Majesty, I don’t know.”

56 The king said, “Find out whose son this young man is.”

57 As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine’s head.

58 “Whose son are you, young man?” Saul asked him.

David said, “I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.”

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA

Q u a l i t y
The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art:
this is The Bible in Paintings, not “Great Paintings” nor even “Good Paintings.” So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don’t need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby’s. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm asking the Holy Spirit to guide. Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.

P a c i n g
The pace may seem glacial to those eager to see their favorite events. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence; if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic. But where there is no art, that Bible passage goes untold here. The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing. Always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!

Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so I’m just having fun here—I hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.

At the Holy Spirit's prompting, I am surveying "Bible art" to give God glory, as many of these artists have done, and for my own amusement and learning; and I thought others might enjoy it and be blessed by it, too. My plan is to proceed methodically from left-to right, Genesis to Revelation, as the Lord wills. Back soon with another.

The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!

But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is coming soon. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year’s viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Here is the Official Trailer.

Here is a link for free viewing of The Chosen: “Works with your phone, tablet, and you can cast to your Roku or Chromecast.” Last fall I paid $34.98 for DVDs and ongoing internet access—best 35 bucks I’ve ever spent (I don’t recall how much our marriage license cost, but then it was 43 years ago).

A number of these have a "third eye" look about them, as if the wisdom and intuition of the "too big to fail" giant is what felled him and his devoted fan club.

I would have never considered that save for your putting a collection together, so your thread idea is a good one on many levels.

#9 looks like the one President Trump ought to keep on hand for a future tweet.

Remember that "comedian" whats-her-name with red hair and an angry spirit, holding up the President's severed head?

These people have no idea how they prophesy/project the demise of their own giant, corrupt beast systems.

Might go a long way in explaining why these historical accounts are there for the reading in the first place. Living parables.

Kathy Griffin. By the way, nice catch on the third eye refrain.

It's inevitable that one sees present-day parallels in every age of the timeless "The bigger they are, the harder they fall" scenario. The Dodgers are in the very midst of illustrating it once again. The media pimp and pump Hillary and Slow Joe and then are stunned when the truth finally is revealed.

I expect that is but a pale reflection of how stunned they will be, considering themselves "too big to fail," at the Great White-Throned Judgment.

Every artist seems to want to paint this scene. I found an unusual website which provided most of them, although it is laborious indeed to wade through all of it: Spencer Alley.

Timeless truths, patterns in history...

Meaning there is always a way to see what's going on, just by paying attention.

Goliath (and gang)... gobsmacked! Everyone has a mission in life. Ol' Goliath served as a timeless real-life parable for that truism about falling down from great heights. Goliath -- a big thug with a thick skull.

He would have done better to use his might to defend the weak, do yard work for the elderly, or build houses or bridges for a living.

Wasted abilities! Felled by little Can-Do David who wanted to build a house for the name of the Lord God of Israel.

Mark 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

a thick skull

Not quite thick enough, apparently.

"and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass..."

I especially love that verse because of what it implies so strongly. Who can help but doubt unless and until they are certain that what they are requesting accords fully with God's will?! So then, first discover God's will, and then pray for its realization.

So far, I've waded back through 2020, 2019 and half of 2018 in approximately 25 hours, an effort I consider to be well worth it. I hope to keep plowing ahead, recording image-location links by Biblical citation for future use, as we reach each point in the ongoing BIP-series narrative.

There are two odd things I've discovered. One is that I cannot seem to learn anything at all about this incredibly productive blogger. The other is how these painters greatly favored certain subjects--Goliath's head is a prime example. Others include: Salome with John's head, the penitent Magdalene, rest on the flight into Egypt, deposition from the cross....and, of course, trillions of madonna and child.

I had the good fortune one summer to stay with my younger sister, who lived in Washington DC, a 10-minute subway ride to the National Gallery of Art. I visited almost every day that summer ! Andrea Del Castagno’s “David” (paint on leather - it’s a parade shield ! ) hanged there. It was ALWAYS a “landmark” for my journeys through the museum .. . THAT was 42 years ago !! I understand it is no longer on exhibit .. .

THANK YOU for posting this image .. . I have secured a photo depository site to hold my images for posting - I just can’t make the jump from posting text to adding a photo : there are NO discernable buttons to activate an image transfer !! Am I a bad person ??

Have you already successfully transferred your images to the depository? I'm assuming it's PhotoBucket or one similar. Can you access them there? All you need is their "image location," an address specific to each image. Do you have that for each? If so, we're in business: no buttons needed.

Reverse the first bracket and post!

To clarify: when you post an image on the internet, such as here on FR, you are not transferring the image here. Instead, you’re sending us to wherever that image resides, which is why we need its address, or Image Location.
