CHAPTER 13
20 Her brother Absalom said to her, Has that Amnon, your brother, been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister; he is your brother. Dont take this thing to heart. And Tamar lived in her brother Absaloms house, a desolate woman.
21 When King David heard all this, he was furious. 22 And Absalom never said a word to Amnon, either good or bad; he hated Amnon because he had disgraced his sister Tamar.

23 Two years later, Absalom invited all the kings sons to come there.
28 Absalom ordered his men, Listen! When Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, Strike Amnon down, then kill him. Dont be afraid. Havent I given you this order? Be strong and brave. 29 So Absaloms men did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered. Then all the kings sons got up, mounted their mules and fled.

David Mourns His Son Amnon
. .
32 Jonadab said, Amnon is dead. This has been Absaloms express intention ever since the day Amnon raped his sister Tamar.
34 Meanwhile, Absalom had fled 37 and went to the king of Geshur. But King David mourned many days for his son.
38 After Absalom fled and went to Geshur, he stayed there three years. 39 And King David longed to go to Absalom, for he was consoled concerning Amnons death.
CHAPTER 14
1 Joab son of Zeruiah knew that the kings heart longed for Absalom. 2 So Joab had a wise woman brought from Tekoa. He said to her, 3 Go to the king and speak these words to him. And Joab put the words in her mouth.
13 The woman said, Why has the king not brought back his banished son? 14 Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But that is not what God desires; rather, he devises ways so that a banished person does not remain banished from him.
19 The king asked, Isnt the hand of Joab with you in all this?
The woman answered, Yes, it was your servant Joab who instructed me to do this and who put all these words into the mouth of your servant. 20 Your servant Joab did this to change the present situation. 21 The king said to Joab, Very well, I will do it. Go, bring back the young man Absalom.

23 Then Joab went to Geshur and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem. 24 But the king said, He must go to his own house; he must not see my face. So Absalom went to his own house and did not see the face of the king.
28 Absalom lived two years in Jerusalem without seeing the kings face. 29 Then Absalom sent for Joab in order to send him to the king.
32 Absalom said to Joab, Look, I sent word to you and said, Come here so I can send you to the king to ask, Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there! Now then, I want to see the kings face, and if I am guilty of anything, let him put me to death.
33 So Joab went to the king and told him this. Then the king summoned Absalom, and he came in and bowed down with his face to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA Q u a l i t y The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art:
this is The Bible in Paintings, not Great Paintings nor even Good Paintings. So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion herethey dont need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sothebys. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm asking the Holy Spirit to guide. Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.P a c i n g The pace may seem glacial to those eager to see their favorite events. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence; if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic. But where there is no art, that Bible passage goes untold here. The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing. Always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so Im just having fun hereI hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.. .

The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!
But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is being filmed right now. I say "leisurely" because after an entire years viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Here is the Official Trailer.
Here is a link for free viewing of The Chosen: Works with your phone, tablet, and you can cast to your Roku or Chromecast. Last fall I paid $34.98 for DVDs and ongoing internet accessbest 35 bucks Ive ever spent (I dont recall how much our marriage license cost, but then it was 43 years ago).

Joab was an evil and cruel man and I think David was actually afraid of him...............
I agree. It’s an interesting dynamic: David had God’s assurances, along with many survival experiences to build confidence; but still he feared Joab. It somewhat parallels our experience as believers, with abundant promises plus the Comforter—yet how often do we fear!
Solomon had Joab executed immediately upon taking the throne, even while Joab was holding onto the horns of the altar, where sacrifices were burnt, and so was Adonijah later..........
Couldn’t really find any art depicting that—had to gloss over it.
Remember who were the commissioners of art and patrons of artists, in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the wealthy and powerful.
They most likely did some of the things Joab was executed for and so would not want to be reminded of their sin on a daily basis hanging on their dining hall walls.................
David was a man after God’s Own Heart, but he was lacking somewhat in his parenting skills.
Polygamy can cause quite a few problems too.
(((I’m sticking to “understatements” today! LOL!)))
Confused in SoCal
PS--Dodgers!
David was always willing to REPENT.
So I think your first option is the best one.
I think you are right once again, O Wise One.
Asking is often Wiser than Telling! :-)

One has to appreciate Tissot. To prepare for his Biblical paintings, he traveled to the Holy Land to study the architecture, the landscape, the people, their clothing, translating his findings and insights into what he believed to be accurate in those ancient times . His series of The Life of Christ is wonderful.
I did not know about his field research, although I’m not at all surprised, because it is so obvious in his work. He has become by far my favorite biblical artist for several reasons, his historical authenticity among them.
