CHAPTER 9
9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.
12 Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.
13 I will bend Judah as I bend my bow
and fill it with Ephraim.
I will rouse your sons, Zion,
against your sons, Greece,
and make you like a warrior’s sword.14 Then the LORD will appear over them;
his arrow will flash like lightning.
The Sovereign LORD will sound the trumpet;
he will march in the storms of the south,
15 and the LORD Almighty will shield them.
They will destroy
and overcome with slingstones.
They will drink and roar as with wine;
they will be full like a bowl
used for sprinkling the corners of the altar.
16 The LORD their God will save his people on that day
as a shepherd saves his flock.
They will sparkle in his land
like jewels in a crown.
17 How attractive and beautiful they will be!
Grain will make the young men thrive,
and new wine the young women..
CHAPTER 10
4 This is what the LORD my God says: “Shepherd the flock marked for slaughter. 5 Their buyers slaughter them and go unpunished. Those who sell them say, ‘Praise the LORD, I am rich!’ Their own shepherds do not spare them. 6 For I will no longer have pity on the people of the land,” declares the LORD. “I will give everyone into the hands of their neighbors and their king. They will devastate the land, and I will not rescue anyone from their hands.”
7 So I shepherded the flock marked for slaughter, particularly the oppressed of the flock. Then I took two staffs and called one Favor and the other Union, and I shepherded the flock. 8 In one month I got rid of the three shepherds.
The flock detested me, and I grew weary of them 9 and said, “I will not be your shepherd. Let the dying die, and the perishing perish. Let those who are left eat one another’s flesh.”
10 Then I took my staff called Favor and broke it, revoking the covenant I had made with all the nations. 11 It was revoked on that day, and so the oppressed of the flock who were watching me knew it was the word of the LORD.
12 I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.
13 And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the handsome price at which they valued me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the house of the LORD.

CHAPTER 13
7 “Awake, sword, against my shepherd,
against the man who is close to me!”
declares the LORD Almighty.
“Strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered,
and I will turn my hand against the little ones.
8 In the whole land,” declares the LORD,
“two-thirds will be struck down and perish;
yet one-third will be left in it.
9 This third I will put into the fire;
I will refine them like silver
and test them like gold.
They will call on my name
and I will answer them;
I will say, ‘They are my people,’
and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.’”

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA
A r t
Q u a l i t y
The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art: this is The Bible in Paintings, not "Great Paintings" nor even "Good Paintings." Indeed, occasionally photographs actually illustrate the text. So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don't need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby's. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm always asking the Holy Spirit to guide.Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.

The Protestant Canon does not (for several reasons) follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I am treating synoptically. Now, onward!
P a c i n g
The pace here may seem appallingly snail-like to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic (but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here).Then, there is the human element: this is not actually a daily series, because I can only research, compose, edit and post five or six of these installments weekly. And because I only get to do this series once, I'm taking my time, chiefly by posting everything. If I find lots of art, I don't cherry-pick some and discard the rest; the one I throw out might be exactly the one that God wants to use to touch your heart. Instead, I line up all of them and then sort them into manageable bunches, often resulting in multiple days' episodes of the same story. Obviously, I like being thorough. Were you in a big hurry?
The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing—this is His project, after all. And always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!. .
Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so I'm just having fun here—I hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.Hebrews 11:6

I noticed that many Medieval painters didn’t know a palm frond from a oak tree branch...................
No internet for them. It’s what distinguishes Tissot and Hole, for example: they actually traveled to the Holy Land to observe, among other things, the flora and fauna.
Good Morning, Dan! :-)
Hello, Mary-Lou, goodbye heart!
They didn’t know ‘palms’ are called ‘palms’ for a reason?..................
It looks like Daniel!
(((Must be the clouds in my eyes))))
Here in SoCal we have desert towns named Twentynine Palms and Thousand Palms. Anything comparable in Florida?
LOL!.........I was stationed at TWENTY-NINE PALMS!..................
We have Palm Bay, where my MIL lives, Palm Beach, where Trump lives and Rush lived, Palm Springs, Palm Coast, Palm EVERYTHING-You-can-think-of!.................
So many great paintings! #14, Giotto, the great 14th c. Florentine painter and architect. By breaking away from the flat, stylized compositions of the Byzantine style that dominated Italy, he paved the way for the Italian Renaissance, one of the most vibrant periods of western art history. Expressions became more realistic, greater humanity and emotions flowed, more attention to details, more vibrant colors.
#2 - Pietro Lorenzetti, together with his brother Ambrogio, brought more naturalism into Sienese art which was rather mystical and fantastic than that of Florence.
#10 - A 12th c. Mosaic from the Cappella Palatina, the Royal Chapel of the Norman Palace in Palermo, one of the wonders of Sicily.
Marine Corps base? Not much of a “marine” environment there.
It was a artillery training and range base and electronics basic schools, radar, crypto, radio schools. 1973, California was still a nice place then.
It is now a desert warfare training base....................
Looking again just now at #14, Giotto's, I find it to be WONDERFUL beyond comprehension. He completely captured the scene. I am compelled to call it the best painting I've ever seen on any subject. I would love to hang a reproduction in my home and may just do so.
Wow.
Just spent a few minutes on Wikipedia, getting introduced to Giotto.
Thank you both, for the link to the Dramatized Audio Bible the was in your posts a few days ago:

I’ve been listening to that every day that I get the time and every evening and have passed it on to several people.
It is very well done and gives my eyes a break, as I’m on the computer working all day on the weekdays and my eyes get quite strained by the end of the day.
You guys are awesome!
