NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art: this is The Bible in Paintings, not "Great Paintings" nor even "Good Paintings." So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don't need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby's. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm always asking the Holy Spirit to guide.
A r t
Q u a l i t yOften, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.
The Protestant Canon does not (for several reasons) follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I will treat synoptically. Now, onward!
T e x t
S e q u e n c i n gThe pace here may seem appallingly snail-like to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic (but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here).
P a c i n g Then, there is the human element: this is not actually a daily series, because I can only research, compose, edit and post five or six of these installments weekly. And because I only get to do this series once, I'm taking my time, chiefly by posting everything; if I find lots of art, I don't cherry-pick some and discard the rest. Rather, I line up all of them and then sort them into manageable bunches, often resulting in multiple days' episodes of the same story. Obviously, I like being thorough. Were you in a big hurry?
The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing—this is His project, after all. And always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!. .
Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so I'm just having fun here—I hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.Hebrews 11:6

I am beginning to understand the thinking of the Pre-Raphaelites.
None of those, not even the Chagalls, touched my heart today.
I guess I’m just a stuck-in-the-mud old poop.
PS: I do play the rock bass and ride a Harley, so I guess I’m not TOO unadventurous after all.
Keep up the good work, Dan! :-)
Today you make us overdose on Marc Chagall! Very few pieces by him appeal to me, I prefer his stained glass windows which are gorgeous!
Me, neither—it’s why I called this “art.” My take is that Chagall and Tschirch realized they were missing the mark, so they just kept on trying and trying and trying. If anyone’s heart was touched today, I hope they tell us here in the comments.
I’m with you.
Stop with the puerile crap! Back to the classics.
Song of songs describe his lover as a young black girl, why are these all white?
Are you not getting your money's worth here? Sorry, I cannot offer you a refund, since this site is provided absolutely free-of-charge.
Do you find, as your comment suggests, that you have an irresistible need to seize control of others' endeavors?
You might benefit from reading the Notes on My Selection Criteria, in green near the bottom of each post.
Oh, and be sure to notify all of us when your own Bible-art site is up and running, so we can all admire the classics.
6 Do not stare at me because I am dark,
because I am darkened by the sun.
My mother’s sons were angry with me
and made me take care of the vineyards;
my own vineyard I had to neglect.
So, rather than being Negroid, it appears she was deeply tanned. That said, artists are notorious for playing fast-and-loose with the text. Most were European and tended to paint what they knew of their immediate environment, and many had never even seen black people.
I agree that these artists failed to show her deep tan. If you're wondering whether I selected out works showing her as being darker, the answer is an emphatic "Nol" I post everything I find, with the only exceptions being described in Notes on My Selection Criteria, in green near the bottom of each post.
I generally like Chagall and impressionism, but these all seemed the same. I liked the colors—they were joyous. But the motifs were just nudes with little reference to scriptures.
I liked Tschisch better, but the same comments apply to him.
I greatly enjoy your work. Your selections are generally quite good. However, a tiresome selecction fo Chagall and the other poseur were more than I could take.
I generally DON’T like Chagall and impressionism, but I ran across these and feel obligated to share my findings for people who do like it. I tried to warn everyone off from what I considered an indifferent grouping, but too much dissuasion only serves to generate undue interest.
I congratulate you for responding to my rebuke. One can assume any number of things about you from your dictatorial harangue this morning and, having been called on it, from your woefully inadequate and wholly unrepentant response presently, but I will not. Instead, I have added you to my prayer list, which is something you most definitely cannot control. You have my very best wishes.
Anyway, as I was chasing down one such image I came across this gallery. All I can say is: notwithstanding my previous comment, if most impressionistic or abstract art were this well done, I would be a fan, too.
I respectfully disagree with you,my own and many other respected theologians are convinced she was in fact from africa.
Regardless, anyone looking at an abundance of biblical art must soon realize the liberties artists in general take with the text. Obviously, the importance of fidelity to the text varies greatly between individuals, but I suspect another factor also plays a significant role. Most artists are, I assume, right-brained; whereas hewing to rules and scriptures seems a left-brained characteristic. Picasso was never going to illustrate the Sermon on the Mount.
Methinks you protest to much. Your dictatorial harangue is ill founded. Either one likes Chagall or one doesn’t. Either one can tolerate the modernists or one can’t. Either one debates a horsesarse or one doesn’t. End.
And I agree that our discussions are ended.
