HOW THESE PROVERBS WERE "SELECTED"
They can be illustrated—that's it!
There's nothing "special" that
differentiates them from all the others.

.

PROVERBS 24

30 I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense; 31 thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins.

32 I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw:

33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—

34 and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

.

PROVERBS 27

23 Be sure you know the condition of your flocks,

give careful attention to your herds;

24 for riches do not endure forever,

and a crown is not secure for all generations.
Beheading of
Marie Antoinette

.

.

PROVERBS 30

18 “There are three things that are
too amazing for me,
four that I do not understand:

19 the way of an eagle in the sky,

the way of a snake on a rock,

the way of a ship on the high seas,

and the way of a man with a young woman.

.

Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character

PROVERBS 31

10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.

11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.

12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.

14 She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.

15 She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants.

16 She considers a field and buys it;

out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.

18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.

19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
by WILLIAM-ADOLPHE BOUGUEREAU, 1873
"The Spinner" with
distaff & spindle

20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.

21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.

22 She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.

25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise and call her blessed;

her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA

A r t
Q u a l i t y
The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art: this is The Bible in Paintings, not "Great Paintings" nor even "Good Paintings." So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don't need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby's. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm always asking the Holy Spirit to guide.

Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.

T e x t
S e q u e n c i n g
The Protestant Canon does not (for several reasons) follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I will treat synoptically. Now, onward!

P a c i n g
The pace here may seem appallingly snail-like to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic (but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here).

Then, there is the human element: this is not actually a daily series, because I can only research, compose, edit and post five or six of these installments weekly. And because I only get to do this series once, I'm taking my time, chiefly by posting everything; if I find lots of art, I don't cherry-pick some and discard the rest. Rather, I line up all of them and then sort them into manageable bunches, often resulting in multiple days' episodes of the same story. Obviously, I like being thorough. Were you in a big hurry?

The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing—this is His project, after all. And always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!

. .

Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so I'm just having fun here—I hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.

It was Proverbs 31 that broke through my bitter, angry feminist barrier and led to my salvation.

I always remember that moment when i read this Bible Passage.

Thanks! :-)

LOL!

You won’t have to wait that long.

Besides, there are no beatings in heaven! hahaha

However, I understand that in the other place there is a motivational sign prominently displayed over the boss’s desk:

“THE BEATINGS WILL CONTINUE
UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES”

Wish I could--I have no insight to offer. I was happy just to find the picture of that kid in pink. But, looking into it:

The word translated as "scarlet" is the Hebrew word "shani," which actually refers to a dye made from a specific insect's carcass. My presumption is that the text is implying if she has gone to the trouble of dying their cold-weather garments, then she has certainly paid sufficient attention to them.

My all time favorite proverb is Proverb 31:7-9. I say it often, and even if I do not repeat it exactly word for word, the Lord knows for which I speak.
Two things I request of You (Deprive me not before I die)

Remove falsehood and lies far from me;
Give me neither poverty nor riches—
Feed me with the food allotted to me;

Lest I be full and deny You,
And say, “Who is the LORD?”
Or lest I be poor and steal,
And profane the name of my God.
To be rich is to take God's blessings for granted and look to yourself as the giver of the blessing. To be poor is the take lightly the name of our Lord, and curse our LORD. When times are good, we tend to forget about God, and think of our own pleasures. We become the center of our own lives. But when thing go really bad, you can start cursing everything around you, even God.

Thus the best policy is to ask the LORD to keep your life balanced in the financial dept. I have been blessed to always be fed, and always to be clothed. Jesus tells us not to worry about our needs, because our heavenly Father will provide the things we need as long as we have faith. It is not to say men cannot handle wealth, but with wealth comes much responsibility and much temptation.

On the other end of the scale, poverty brings it's own temptation that can lead to many unforeseen troubles. Many fail to understand that poverty can breed more greed than wealth can, but the greed of the poor person is warped in their covertness others have been blessed with. This covertness, can lead a weak heart to commit crimes beyond comprehension.

This is the reason I pray often for neither rich's nor poverty. If we are diligent in our faith in God, we can always be assured that He will be diligent in blessing us with that which He knows we can handle. I guess that's why every time I see one of my stocks ready to breakout, something unforeseen happens that keeps me at the mid financial level I am always in. Or why out of the blue I receive a bonus from a place unforeseen and expected.

Thus, I would much rather trust His Wisdom over mine. God is good to those who pay heed to his prescepts.

The spectacle of a believer's deep understanding and employment of a scripture passage, as you have displayed here, obviously propelled by the Spirit working in you, is gladdening to the heart. (Sorry I couldn't envision a way to illustrate it for you.)

You say it's your favorite proverb, but I'm certain that you have other favorite passages, too. So do I: Hebrews 11:6, as you might expect, has been chief among them for twenty-five years.

All of which raises a new thought in me: I wonder whether, in heaven, one of our favorite activities will be doing what you just did, explaining to each other how--specifically and in detail--our Lord has blessed us with the deep applications of scripture we've been blessed to realize and appreciate.

Oh, I am sure they do. However, if they are not, then they will when we get there. LOL

I journal every morning after my quiet reading time. In it, I write what the Holy Spirit touches my heart to write. Sometimes I'm empty of thoughts, So I just write what I did yesterday or what we have planned for the day.

When I go back reading my journals, I am quite impressed at the times I thought I was winging it, yet the Spirit did moved me. Almost always what I write becomes pertinent as I look back. Even some of the things I wrote about what I did, or would do seemed a bit influenced by the Spirit.

I'm sure you will find this interesting,

I was in an old used bookstore the other day. I like looking for old books written my Christians who came and went long before we lived. If I find one I like I purchase it. Well as I was looking I came across a Picture Bible, put together for children. Every page is illustrated to tell the story. It was published in 1979.

As I flipped through it I was impressed at the accuracy of their short explanations added to the illustrations. As you know, with children you must truncate stories to get the idea across to their young minds, without sacrificing the message of the event.

I decided to purchase it, with the desire to send it to one of my grandchildren. Which one I haven't decided yet, but possibly to my son's children since he has more and they are the youngest.

This last image shows you from the index which scriptures
they used to get the stories. They actually did a good job of
keeping a good flow through the Bible to get the overall
history and lessons across without losing the attention of a Childs mind.

Fascinating. It has current relevance for me, in much the same way you've noticed the Holy Spirit's activity upon reflection. My six-year-old granddaughter received an Adventure Bible from us for Christmas, and now my wife is taking her through it.
