Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offeringfat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
Then the Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.
Now Cain said to his brother Abel, Lets go out to the field. While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
Then the Lord said to Cain, Where is your brother Abel?
I dont know, he replied. Am I my brothers keeper?
Here is the Bing page "CAIN AND ABEL IN ART showing various painters' conceptions of Cains murder of his brother Abel. Several are serious works worthy of interest. We have an especially rich selection today--apparently, it's a popular subject. Some examples:
Again, here is the Bing page "CAIN AND ABEL IN ART, with many more images. Additionally, here are links to compendia of three masters who painted Biblical scenes prolifically:
Finally, here are links to the PREVIOUS POSTS IN THIS SERIES.
The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.), and these artists have done so and their works can assist us. But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is coming soon. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it. Here is the Official Trailer.
This particular incident has generated a lot of Fine Art!
Thanks for posting these.
Interesting variety today. I ended with Tissot’s because it’s like a punch in the gut. or a kick in the groin. Intensely memorable.
Yes...it shows quite an age difference as well.
Tissot imagined.
It also highlights the differences in God’s acceptance of their sacrifices. Cain is shown as a rather gruff adult male, and Abel as an innocent shepherd boy. Cain’s “sacrifice” was probably done as a grudging religious obligation, while Abel sacrificed the first born of his little flock, which was a real hardship in those rugged times. The facial expressions indicate Abel’s purity of heart vs. Cain’s cynicism.
I think Tissot nailed it.
Taking the liberty of alerting you to the next installment in the series.
Thanks for the post. I bought the Chosen on Amazon since I don’t watch TV.
I'm a complete fanatic about it (and am far from alone). I've seen the entire eight episodes 10 or 12 times--every couple of weeks. Best video I've ever seen, by far.
I bought it. . .but I checked and it wasn’t on Amazon. I’ll have to see where I got it from. Duh!
I have every confidence in you.
Thanks but why require sign up? Probably copyrighted as well. Why not just make it freely accessible. Do you think Paul required registrations in order to read his epistles and copyrighted them?
Of course, copyrighting is a much more recent invention, although I'm guessing his words as you read them today are indeed copyrighted by the publisher of your Bible--but yours is an objection deserving of a full response.
Paul solicited and accepted contributions (e.g., Acts 9, 16, 28; 2 Cor. 11, Php. 4, 2 Th. 5, Phm.), as do the producers of The Chosen. Indeed, their financial dealings, when carefully examined, turn out to be one of the most remarkable and laudatory aspects of the entire enterprise:
* they set a world record for "crowdfunding" the first season, exceeding $10,000,000
* during the recent lockdown, they suspended viewing fees entirely and gave away their product to one and all
* they cannot make it "freely accessible" because the fees they collect are pre-funding the upcoming second season, as shown on their PAY IT FORWARD page: at this moment 316,497 wildly enthusiastic donors worldwide have contributed $5,854,373 toward the $10 million needed for the eight episodes of Season 2
As your brother in Christ, I hope I may presume to encourage you to move past your objections somehow, so you don't miss the immense blessing of this unique series, which has God's hand all over it. (And if your personal finances are at issue, FRmail me and I'll gladly fund your viewing.)
No, not the KJV in the USA, and which should not be copyrighted, thus turning those who freely copy it into criminals.
Paul solicited and accepted contributions (e.g., Acts 9, 16, 28; 2 Cor. 11, Php. 4, 2 Th. 5, Phm.), as do the producers of The Chosen.
False equivalence: Paul was not requiring registration in order to read what he wrote.
they cannot make it "freely accessible" because the fees they collect are pre-funding the upcoming second season,
The issue and question in this regard is whether one can freely copy and share what is produced, without registration and paying fees.
(And if your personal finances are at issue, FRmail me and I'll gladly fund your viewing.)
That is not the issue, thank God, having left all to serve the Lord full-time without salary or solicitation, glory to Him, but the objection is based upon principle. If God calls one into ministry, then He can be counted on provide what we need to do His work - though our faith will be tested at times - without burdening brethren and the practice of sending out appeals - much less to the public - and or disallowing copying of the work by others who share it for free.
Suit yourself.
I’ve decided to read the Bible again first time in 50 years due to your wonderful links
Tks
May I ask: do you have some sort of reading plan in mind?
