CHAPTER 37

1 The hand of the LORD was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”

I said, “Sovereign LORD, you alone know.”

4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5 This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath[a] enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”

7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.

9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.

11 Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. 14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the LORD have spoken, and I have done it, declares the LORD.’”

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA

A r t Q u a l i t y

The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art: this is The Bible in Paintings, not "Great Paintings" nor even "Good Paintings." Indeed, occasionally photographs illustrate the text. So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don't need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby's. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm always asking the Holy Spirit to guide.

Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.

T e x t S e q u e n c i n g

The Protestant Canon does not (for several reasons) follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I will treat synoptically. Now, onward!

P a c i n g

The pace here may seem appallingly snail-like to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic (but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here).

Then, there is the human element: this is not actually a daily series, because I can only research, compose, edit and post five or six of these installments weekly. And because I only get to do this series once, I'm taking my time, chiefly by posting everything; if I find lots of art, I don't cherry-pick some and discard the rest. Rather, I line up all of them and then sort them into manageable bunches, often resulting in multiple days' episodes of the same story. Obviously, I like being thorough. Were you in a big hurry?

The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing—this is His project, after all. And always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!

Well I got through a three hour rehearsal on Thursday night without having to pee on my fingers, so I guess I will be OK...Hey that reminds me of a story! It involves a Harley, a selfie, a man with hubris, the Arctic Circle, a carburetor, and pee.

Let me collect my thoughts a bit, and I will get back to you.

OK...Here We Go!

Not my friend Jack, but, you get the idea.

(Note: This is an apocryphal tale, told around a campfire in Laconia NH back in 1995. I have no idea if it's really TRUE!)

Jack was the adventurous type, and he and some friends decided that they would ride their Harleys up the Alaskan Highway to the Arctic Circle, which is clearly marked with a sign. As the big day grew nearer, the friends opted out one-by-one, until Jack was the only one who wanted to go.

In spite of all advice to NOT do the trip alone, Jack was too proud to give up his quest.

And so he headed North. After miles and miles of lonely, steady driving, Jack saw the iconic sign up ahead.

This was in the days before smart phones, so taking a "selfie" involved setting up a tripod, mounting the camera, setting a timer, and getting into position for the shot. This was successful, and Jack then dismantled the tripod and camera, and packed them back onto the motorcycle. Then, he tried to start up the bike for the long trip home.

It was then that Jack saw that the carburetor was encased in ice. After a moment of abject terror at the thought of freezing to death, alone, at the Arctic Circle, Jack resourcefully bathed the frozen carburetor in 98.6 degree water from his own body, which melted the ice completely. The bike started up and Jack rode home as fast as his little wheels could take him.

The Moral of the story is this:

In a desperate situation, USE WHATEVER YOU GOT!

I just looked up the mileage from Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle Monument. It is “only” 198 miles. A short afternoon ride in Florida, or even Massachusetts. However, it’s pretty far in freezing weather! I wouldn’t want to do it...and I am not equipped to thaw a frozen carburetor.

Compare 41 and 55.

It reminds me of a problem that almost killed a Silicon Valley company.

Dry bone on the right in 41, and the left on 55. As my English language eyes scan across the artwork, I “see” the progression in 41 as living to bones, were I a Hebrew or Arabic speaker, I’d see read it right-to-left, bones to living.

The company had square arrays to study alloys with gradient concentrations of one metal thick to thin, left to right, and the other top to bottom.

They hired scientist some Western linguistically left-to-right top-to-bottom, some middle eastern right-to-left top-to-bottom, some Chinese top-to-bottom left-to-right, some Japanese top-to-bottom right-to-left.

Only square one was marked.

Each investigator used the orientation they were comfortable with.

They nearly went broke trying to unsnarl the data!
