MATTHEW 27:57-59 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body….

MARK 15:42-46 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen….

LUKE 23:50-53 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth….

JOHN 19:38-40 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night.

All very beautiful and heartbreaking paintings and sculptures.
I have to mention the one by Rogier van der Weyden, one of the greatest masterpieces of Christian art, and one of the most influential works of early Netherlandish Renaissance - circa 1435.
Monumental in concept, charged with an emotional intensity that draws us in, a choreography that is a balance of forms, movements, drapery and color. The body of Jesus is mirrored by that of Mary, their pallor equal, one in death, the other in intense grief, their hands almost touching to emphasize their close spiritual relationship. Mary Magdalene, on the verge of collapse from sorrow, and Saint John on the left, form two brackets, or curtains, to keep our attention on the center. The skull at the bottom could be interpreted as a Memento Mori or a reference to Golgotha (the place of the Skull in Aramaic). The skull is supposedly that of Adam thus creating a link between man’s original sin and the salvation offered by Christ’ sacrifice - the new Adam.

I notice skulls in many of these paintings--a common theme. The other place I've noticed that is in portraits of the Magdalene (which I refrained from posting), which nearly all show her with a skull.

Some see it as a symbol of our own mortality, penance as a preparation to death; others see it as reference to her having been at the Crucifixion and I even read that the skull represents that of John the Baptist as the forerunner of Jesus Christ. Lots of explanations to suit every belief.

I noticed skulls in a lot of these...same amazement as I've expressed frequently.

The Rubens at 1, 11, and 12 are particularly dramatic, and Tiepolo at 15 has the same 'pallor comparison' you noted. Fantastic education, thank you so much!

Her past as a demoniacX7, which is her chief distinctive, suggests yet another meaning to me: that the skull in portraits of her represents her former life leading to death, from which Jesus delivered her. These works show her contemplating that deliverance, as should every believer.

If you consider the small size of the painting (around 8.5 x 6.5 more or less), Rogier van der Weyden managed to create an extraordinary and busy work full of pathos. When I think of the Deposition this is the one that comes to my mind, not all the other great paintings as they might be, for its uniqueness and emotional impact.

To those who are already familiar with this genre, a note of explanation is in order for the absence of several works you might have expected to see here.

I found that many, many artists depicted the weight of Jesus' body incompetently--indeed, often almost comically. So, in showing Jesus lowered from the cross, only one or two hands, loosely grasping, bore his 170 or so pounds. And in tomorrow's thread, often Mary is shown supporting Him in preposterous poses, as though she had Samson's strength.

So, I made the editorial decision to omit those works which so flaunted God's gravity.

While your point is valid and I respect it, think of the times when these artists lived and worked, the public to whom they had to transmit the message of these stories. An accurate depiction of the human body has evolved through time. Most artists see the world as a mass of shapes, colors, lines and forms. Studies have been made on this subject, how artists sees reality versus non artists. Would you have eliminate Dali striking and transcendental Crucifixion of yesterday’s page?
Anyway, your work has been massive, representative, not easy, Dan, and I thank you for the beauty you bring us while we meditate on the Bible stories.

Good call. I agree; yesterday's panoply certainly contained some of that stuff—a wide range of anatomy understanding, to put it nicely—another reason the Dali (crucifixion seen from above) stood out so luminously. As he did his studies for the painting, Dali had a model in his studio suspended by ropes to an apparatus simulating a cross.

Agree that the van der Weyden is magnificent.

Interesting that the great majority used a red robe or garment to point up this gruesome scene.

The Michelangelo sculpture #25 appears unfinished; but the body proportions are already "set in stone"—and the proportions appear distorted, with the heads of the upper figures so much larger than the head of the disciple on the lower left. My art history teacher might have attributed this to the "dynamic symmetry" pioneered by the Greeks, since this statue was probably intended to be raised on a pedestal and viewed from below, much like Michelangelo's David, which is also slightly top-heavy.

Of all the methods of lowering the body, Tissot's #4 seems envisioneered in the most practical way to avoid further damaging the remains of their beloved Lord. I see that Tissot is deep into his muted, sorrowful palette, that "throws a veil" over the horror of the scene.

As a piece of particularly Italian Renaissance art, the Filippino Lippi/Pietro Perugino #5 is a delight for the eye of color, gloss, shapes, and movement, all while depicting a deeply mournful subject; so IMHO it falters a little spiritually while succeeding lavishly in the worldly direction.

Ever since the first moment when first I grasped the Lord's intention for this series, I have understood it to be not about art at all, but rather about encouraging and facilitating exactly that: meditation upon Scripture.
