27:45-49 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” ). When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.” Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.” | 15:33-36 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” ). When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. | 23:44-46 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” | 19:25-30
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. Thank you Dan... a wonderful collection indeed.
Happy Labor Day to you!
Thanks for posting.
Good Morning, Dan.

And to you, Leon. I’ve been retired for seven years now, so to me Labor Day has a different import.
My pleasure.
That is a beauty—I have it on the final crucifixion thread, tomorrow. I read that SalDal deliberately eschewed nails, crown and stripes in order to focus solely on the cross.
Interesting.
I cannot look at these paintings so I will focus on the wonderful Tissot, at the top of the page, with the crowd as seen from the cross. Only the feet of the Christ are visible, and among those gathered around, some are emotionally distraught and some are enjoying seeing a beloved man slowly suffering his death.
Only Tissot, that I’ve seen, gives us the cross’-eye view. I don’t see any way to minimize the Holy Spirit’s immense influence on his work.

Yes, when I saw Tissot at the start, I thought “Oh, he started with the best.” But each picture is unique and moving.
I thought Dali’s crucifixion pictures were super striking. Blake, as usual, was kind of ‘out of the box’. Dore’s engraving was amazing. It really is overwhelming. I can’t even analyze, and I do that in my sleep.
Yes, Dali’s vision of the Crucifixion is striking. The unblemished body of Christ signifies his triumph over death. As an aside, the model for the woman looking up in devotion was Dali’s wife Gala.
