2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

#1 by Veronese is a favorite, it is huge and in the Louvre facing the Mona Lisa. I like the way the bridegroom is looking at his glass wondering, how did he do that? Christ certainly knew how to get peoples attention with that first miracle, in my opinion if he performed no more it was a good enough reason to follow him.

I love the Flemish artists too much! Aside from the wonderful stained glass windows, my preference is Gerard David (#2). Vastly influenced by Hans Memling, this work is dignified, rather severe yet has a gentle mysticism and a good handling of light and space.
For illustrator, favorite is #30 - he brings us into the intensity of this moment, Jesus in deep concentration, the servers in awe, we are all holding our breath watching the miracle unfold.
Weistling, as one of our top contemporary painters today, was also well known for his paintings of early American pioneer life.

When looking at David’s, I am struck by the wooden, deadpan nonexpressions on every face. The contrast with Crespi’s at #5 is immense. Why? Was there a point? Because looking at it 500 years later, it speaks to me of indifference and incompetence.

We can always find foolish people to mock--this world is chock-full-o'-nuts. They are easy targets, absolute sitting ducks.

Meanwhile, we have a true miracle here that we're celebrating; indeed, we have a Savior who approves of, and participates in, and contributes to a human wedding celebration. That's my focus.

In this selected group of paintings and illustrations, #30 is the only one that really focuses on the miracle itself instead of the artists trotting out their full toolkit of painterly excesses—drapery, musculature, architecture, furnishings, clothing, dramatic poses, etc. One doesn't know where to look first, and in most of those grand tableaux you have to work at picking out which one is Jesus.

Now that film and photography have "informed" painters in minute detail about the natural movement of people and objects, paintings no longer display that melodramatic, hand-to-heart and head-thrown-back, eyes-rolled upward body language that characterizes so many of the Renaissance paintings, reminiscent of pantomimes and operas.

So it's refreshing to see that due to the greatly more difficult workmanship required to assemble glass and lead or tile and grout, the stained glass and mosaic works are focused much more clearly on the main elements of the story: Jesus, Mary, bride, groom, water/wine.

It’s a fascinating miracle (of course they all are) and not just because it was first. He was asked to do it by someone with no real interest in the outcome, it didn’t heal an illness, or raise the dead, or drive out a demon or anything like that. In some ways it’s mundane in comparison. But it was done to aid a celebration. It brought joy to those at the party, and it was an amazing display of who he was.

As the original poster, I avoid overtly inflicting my personal opinions on the viewers, but I am committed to responding to each of theirs—and in doing so I have plenty of opportunity for self-expression. All of which is to say that, if I had summarized my own reaction to this unique and wonderful event, it would have incorporated most of the elements you just highlighted, among others.
