LUKE, Chapter 2

41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.

#2 by Serodine is a favorite, Christ among the Doctors. I saw it at the Louvre Museum and just gazed at it for an hour. I have it on my wall at home.

#5, by Hoffman, was on my grandmother’s dining room wall throughout my childhood. I loved that painting so much (I’m sure it was just a cheap Depression-era print, but to me, it was Wonderful!)

What a spectacle that must have been, for those old coots to have been jarred out of their smug complacency by a mere boy. As I was preparing today's and tomorrow's thread, with sixty images showing astonished geezers, one thought recurred: what was the thing He said that stopped them in their tracks?

He is still confounding them.

Hoffman captured the drama of the central Christ absolutely dominating. Yet, no one is actually speaking.

In modern times, the analog would have him lost in Cabela's ("World's Foremost Outfitters"), asking for all the details about the new fishing lures and camping gear, while freely giving sage advice to anyone wanting to take up outdoor activities.

Ironic, isn't it though? History teaches that the establishments (Egypt/Pharaoh, Herod, all Jerusalem..) got violently riled up when rumors of a Deliverer were swirling all about, so they freaked and staked out the delivery rooms to watch for the deliveries.

The dark side never sees what's right in front of it!

#10, a masterpiece of the late Renaissance by the Italian artist Veronese. I like the placement of Jesus high above the doctors, emphasizing his theological superiority. Some of the doctors look confused, searching in their books, others seem mesmerized. The attention to detail in the architecture, which was derived by drawings of the Roman architect Vitruvius, author of De Architectura; the expressions, garments, colors, all fantastic. Notice the bearded man on the right, he wears the black garments of a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher and holds the staff of a pilgrim. Some scholars suggested he might be the person who commissioned the painting, having recently come back from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Mary and Joseph are portrayed among the crowd, they have just entered the temple, after 3 days of searching for their missing son.

There are childhood prodigies, and there are amazing upstarts, and then there is The Emmanuel Kid.

That is striking. He is ushering in the NEW Testament, and it is starting right there. He’ll be instructing them for another two decades in-person, and ultimately they all will bow before Him.

Therefore, it is another one of those (near) miraculous things:

HANDS

Every single one is 'telling the story' with hands!
#1 Vignon has a lot of movement, Jesus' mouth-open speaking, hands gesticulating...(Vignon had, like, 35 kids, so I suppose he's used to a lot of movement)...
#4 Filippi, many hands in open-palmed supplication vs. Jesus' 2 fingers making a point
#16 Baburin many hands moving, and with an angular 'movement' from the leg/foot/feet in the lower left to the (many) hand-movement in the upper right...
I like #23 Panini because it shows the largest crowd. Jesus 'deserves' a large audience and he gets it here, though #10 suggests a large crowd...
#26 Bassano, especially like Jesus' open-handed presentation, following a line to a doctor ticking-off points, to Mary's prayer-clasped hands...beautiful line and composition there...

Artists separated by thousands of miles and hundreds of years, ALL using hands to tell a story. Amazing.

So, unlike #10, Verones, where eta points out he's placed superiorly, it may have been more like Tissot's vision, all of them looming over him in "I'll show you, you young whippersnapper!"- pose

That's the fun of it, imagining. Does it sound like Jesus to you, climbing to a lofty perch in order to appear superior?

So, a thought problem: If you were painting the scene, how would you portray it?

I like Panini's composition, #23, as reflecting best how I imagine it.

Standing alone, not being crowded or cowed. Some ppl above, some below...rather the boy Jesus is in the midst of them. And again, the audience is large. I like that.
