LUKE, Chapter 2
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Well, we all see what the globalist elite Herod, the not so Great, did with the news. Our world is upside down. The meek shall inherit and the power/money hungry elite shall be punished according to their (many) sins.
You said a mouthful!......................
Good Morning, Dan! :-)
In this world, there are always Herods, overturning God’s moral and political economy. In a week we’ll see this Herod’s effort, his response to the Magis’ news: the Slaughter of the Innocents. But thankfully, God is greater than all the Herods combined.
Just reporting on the artists’ statements...............
Same tou YOU, Mary-Lou!
Um, I’m guessing you just kind of whizzed past #84, eh?
In these pieces, 24, or 60%, have the donkey and ox (or in some instances, at best, 'cow with horns').
Think about it. These artists in many cases are separated by centuries and thousands of miles. Travel and communication was spotty, I'd say, in the periods shown here, but they're using the same symbolism!
Incredible! How? You know what? My guess is landing on Holy Spirit inspired - too many coinkydinks!
Make a fist, hold it to your eye like a telescope, and the darker areas of the paintings become sharper (pro tip :)))
Re: Domenico Ghirlandaio @ 1485 Italian (from yesterday)ox and donkey = Jews & Gentlies

#81 Coffermans – 1500’s Flemish/Belgium
Not to mention there's no paucity of lambs, eggs, and hens!
I'm very very thankful to you Dan for starting this, and eta and others who help with more info. I am finding that these paintings seem to come alive, something I've rarely experienced before.
#67, Correggio's use of light is astounding, emanating from the babe – even the maid seems to be trying to shade her eyes from the glory!
Yesterday, in discussing Ghirlandaio's #41, you explained your understanding that the ox and donkey represent Gentiles and Jews. Of course, both are needed in the picture: the donkey, which pregnant Mary rode from Nazareth; and the ox, to explain the stable and manger. So, at a minimum the text serves to inspire their representation, and the Holy Spirit was certainly on-duty to answer any artist's request.
Really, you should thank The Big Artist in the Sky for this series, instead of me. This was entirely His idea and enablement, as I've made clear previously.
Wow, thanks for posting this wonderful art! It is a great way to appreciate the various styles, interpretations, and common elements. Now I need to go look at all your previous threads!
Dan
Been there!
Of course, which is why I labeled you as the artist.
While Trinity Church may have a Burne-Jones, the UU church in West Roxbury has a Tiffany Rose Window that is HUGE.
https://www.tparkerchurch.org/about/our-stories/stained-glass-windows/
I grew up[ near that church and was fascinated by the windows, but not the theology (or lack thereof)
Their theology is every bit as blurry and out-of-focus as are their window-photos.
LOL!
Additionally the water jug and pan as well as the bundle evidences his birth.....the donkey and bag at Mary's feet attests to their journey to the stable and the idea she would soon have given birth.
