MATTHEW Ch. 3 3 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

MARK Ch. 1 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

LUKE Ch. 3 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

JOHN Ch. 1 32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

Both Matthew and Mark state that Jesus came "up out of the water," suggesting immersion and not sprinkling. The Catholic Church's stance mandating sprinkling dictated these European painters' compositions.

Some of the paintings show John using a seashell instead of a bowl to hold the water. Scallop shell, Mollusk shell, clam shell..................

She sells seashells by the seashore, but also by the river, and John bought one.

I know Renaissance painters don’t just up and put stuff in their paintings for the heck of it. AND MULTIPLE ONES DID IT. There is symbology at work here. The ‘shell’ means something, other than a container for water.

The only thing that pops into my head is ‘Birth of Venus’:

John is pouring out the OLD Paganism (Venus) and starting the NEW era of Christian religion.....................

#68 by Perugino. This Renaissance fresco is a combined effort of Perugino and Pinturicchio. Pinturicchio is believed to have painted the landscape and scenes to the left and right of the baptism scene. There are two secondary scenes, Christ Preaching on the right and the Sermon of John the Baptist on the left. Visually impressive work.

#70 - Great stained glass window.

#74 Poussin - The artist made several version of the baptism, I like this one, painted as a more intimate, spiritual event. And, talking about immersion or sprinkling, he does not need Jesus unclothed as he kneels on the banks of the river.

I wondered this yesterday when you pointed out Leonardo's virtuosity, and now Poussin's raises it again in my poor noggin: again and again and again, artists clothe characters in the richest of robes, silk and satin and whatever, in a way that seems completely out of context of their personality and the location--as in Poussin's.

It seems so incongruous to me that I need their ulterior motive. My suspicion is that it's their excuse for showing off their skills in painting draperies. What say you?

Your dalliance here with these very limited sea-critters reminds me of a favorite memory with one of my daughters, when she was about twelve.

Joanna painted her bedroom sky-blue and wanted to add fluffy white clouds. So, I took her to the paint store; we described her plan to the clerk, who recommended sea-sponges for creating the proper effect. I mentioned these once had been living beings, and Joanna was astonished: "You mean, with eyes and everything?"

Well, artists had to make their paintings visually pleasing, for their patrons and their audiences. They were not just Bible illustrators, they created grandiose works that were also a reflection of the fashion and taste of the time. Just look at a painting and enter in communion with the artist, what are the emotions, feelings that come to you, let it speak to you. That is what has worked for me, totally immersing myself into the painting and studying every detail. That is the beauty of art, it becomes a very personal interpretation.

Well said. My personal interpretation is that these out-of-context fripperies detract from the scene being presented, drawing my attention to themselves and away from the Biblical message. The artist thereby inserts himself into the picture, when I didn’t need him at all.

I noticed the seashells too, but didn't think much of it...sounds like a plausible explanation too RB...until eta gets here lol!

#40, Elsheimer - places a lot of drama in the scene with the watching host. He painted "Holy Family w/ St. John the Baptist" similarly, with lots of heavenly host action and crowds.

I must like it when the artists 'crowd' the scene bc I like #42 by Isaacsz as well, though his 'staging' (is it called composition?) is curious to me. 1st, Christ is not at the center, instead two women and several children, one of whom is breastfeeding (a somewhat mundane action back then neh?), so the artist seems to 'center' on the 2 Marys(?)...hmm, why? *shrugs*... and who & why are those 'climbing' on the right? They're an additional movement, or focus, away form the main event. Still, I like the drama, the 'busyness' of it overall.

I also seem to like Baroque (I looked it up :)) bc it has action & drama...as in the previous, but also the dramatic bodies of #45, Spranger and the busyness of #54, DeClerk as well. I think Baroque & Mannerist are similar styles, at least in the drama department!

I liked how #59, Buchbinder, captures the feeling of John not feeling worthy to baptize Jesus...he depicts John as kneeling at least 'a bit'.

#64, the Russian, is different than all the rest...I like Gaagarin's use of light and Angels...very 'stylistic', he seems to have purposefully framed & composed it...maybe 'staged' it to even look obviously staged.
Curious, I looked into him a bit...he also painted mohamed, so I ended up not having a good feel for him. (it wasn't mentioned that he died of a beheading, though lol!)
