MATTHEW
9:20-22Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”
Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment.
MARK
5:24b-34A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
“You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
LUKE
8:42b-48As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.
“Who touched me?”Jesus asked.
When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.”
But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”
Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

Good Morning, Dan! :-)
Helloooooooooooo, Sunshine!
This is one occasion when it’s OK to tug on Superman’s cape.
Love #5! Light emanating from a smiling Jesus. Yongsung Kim is a wonderful artist.
To be honest, I was reluctant to include it, despite its beauty, because it belies the text. Kim shows her tugging on Jesus’ garment in a way that He would have felt physically, whereas He reported feeling power go out from Him as His means of noticing it.
A nice se of very poignant images today.
se = set
Inwardly, I was searching for the summation of today’s tread that seemed to be trying to surface, and you captured it.
Yes, he noticed the power go out of him but, in my opinion, he is smiling because he knew another creature was healed. He exudes serenity and joy.
And that is part of why I included it.
Great selections!
My favorites: 37, and 18. There has to be a back story to depict as a blond. Knowing the context might be as interesting as the painting.
Please include me in the ping list.
Just kidding, of course. Welcome aboard! One thing I always point out is that this is not actually a daily series—I can only manage five or six posts weekly—so don't take it amiss when a day goes by with no ping.
Dan
I was pleased to see so many artists depicting the tzitzit correctly—the tassels at the edge of Jesus’ garment.
It is the most insignificant possible touch. The woman knew she was unclean and Jesus was holy and didn’t want to defile Him.
But there is also a prophecy of the Messiah coming with ‘healing in His wings’. The tzitzit were considered the wings of the garment. ‘Wings’ in Hebrew is very broad—the outer reaches of anything is a metaphorical wing. Likely, the woman had faith that Jesus was the Messiah and that He would heal her, as promised in scripture.
The Bible Project has a great video about how Jesus reversed the flow of uncleanness. Normally, in the OT, clean things are defiled by unclean things. But with Jesus, the Son of God, unclean things are made holy by Him.
Here’s the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9vn5UvsHvM&t=5s
I first learned about tzitzits on an episode of Elementary several years ago. Now, I know more.
I enjoyed The Bible Project video. Perhaps you've noticed that I include a link in each thread to their summary of whichever book(s) I'm illustrating; my wife likes them so much she has incorporated them into her daily Bible studies (and has begun sending them money). But I haven't really explored their site. Now I will, given the quality of that video--and I'm already paid up!
Jesus transferring His holiness is far from a new topic, of course (He takes our sin and gives us His righteousness). Indeed, I was reminded of Mary Magdalene's comment from The Chosen, when another pointed out the failure to stop the ongoing depravity in the Red Quarter: "I don't think He was waiting for us to clean it up, but He's here because we cannot."
#30 & 31, Veronese obviously liked this story, painting 2 different scenes of it!
Tenacious clinging
to the hem of His cloak
just one touch
gathered the fabric
of words that He spoke
and wrestle like Jacob
I'm not letting go
through broken-heart tempests
though tears freely flow
I'm 'minded of Jesus
His death on the tree
his side pouring water
life's blood out for me
the world can't contain
all the books that'd be wrote
His healing, the dead raise,
the lonely sorrow worn coat
so hiding in Him now
stumble finish the race
and trembling the hand grips
a thread of His grace.
Hey, stranger. About time you shared some of your poetics.
