31 Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: "'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." 33 Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will." 34 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." 35 But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same. 69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. 70 But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth." 72 He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!" 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away." 74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly. | 27 "You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written: "'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.' 28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." 29 Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not." 30 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "today--yes, tonight--before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times." 31 But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same. 66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. "You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus," she said. 68 But he denied it. "I don't know or understand what you're talking about," he said, and went out into the entryway. 69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, "This fellow is one of them."70 Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean." 71 He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them, "I don't know this man you're talking about."72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times." And he broke down and wept. | 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. | 15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard, 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in. 17 "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked Peter. He replied, "I am not." 18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself. 25 As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not." 26 One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, "Didn't I see you with him in the olive grove?" 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow. |

Good Ol’ Tissot! He did a separate painting for EACH denial.
I find that interesting. Perhaps Tissot was saying that each denial was a stand-alone sin...and there were THREE of them. (Just speculating)
Oh, I think that is absolutely his meaning, and more importantly the text’s intent: Peter had three separate opportunities to live out your tagline, and thrice he did what everyman does.
Most of these artists depict Peter as an old man. I don’t think he was that old, probably mid thirties..................
I agree with you completely and am troubled by this convention of theirs. As I thought about it yesterday while readying this thread for posting, I could only conclude it’s a classic case of “Monkey See, Monkey Do.”
This, and Jesus calling him “Satan,” point to a strange situation as to why the Catholic church claim him as “their rock.”
Well, Jesus named him Petros, rock, because he displayed steadfast faith. Like everyone, Simon Peter was simply a flawed human. There remains the issue of how to understand the next phrase, “and on this rock I will build my church.”
“Steadfast” does not equate to “deny thrice.”
Something is off, there.
My faith is absolutely steadfast, and yet I still sin. Jesus hasn't announced to me my specific sins ahead-of-time, but then I've never proudly proclaimed that I will NEVER commit them, as Peter did.
It was this same Peter who, having been so chastened, was able to warn us from his own painful experience, "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

Conservative, it wasn’t just Peter being called Satan that is strange.
Most don’t equate the shepherd staff of Moses and the priesthood staff of Aaron becoming serpents, as Satan, but those events picture a time that Satan was going to be allowed in the church, represented by the shepherd and priesthood staffs.
For His purposes, Satan was allowed to lead the flock.
And not just the Roman Catholic flock.
The whole leavened flock.
Hebrews, lots of mysteries/clues with these denials of Peter.
The cock crowing twice in Mark.
The differences in the gospels about who is confronting Peter.
Maid, multitudes, men.
I haven’t been allowed to figure the discrepancies of the accusers of Peter out yet.
The 2 cock crows in Marks version, though, is consistent with what Marks gospel prophecies.
Conservative, by the gospel of John, the denials are done and Peter is given the opportunity to declare his love three times.
If one accepts the premise that Satan was always going to be allowed in the church, then sometime in the future, Satan gets his tail grabbed.
And the church will return to its proper role. Shepherding and priestly work..
And as the scriptures say, an unbelieving Israel needs to see the staffs become serpents, then return to staffs.
It is the first sign that causes Israel to believe.
Thanks Hebrews for your work.
It’s up to Jesus to root out the church’s tares, and He will. Peter will be nearby, cheering Him on...
I heard a preacher say that the word translated for rock - when Jesus was indicating Peter - meant, or implied "rolling stone"...shifting, unsteady...and when He said; “and on this rock I will build my church.” Jesus pointed at Himself.
(and also the word translated to rock this time, meant solid, unshifting).
The Seghers at #2 looks more like Caravaggio than the Caravaggio at #3! I am definitely seeing Caravaggio's influence in quite a few of these...at least I think I'm seeing it (still learning - this is my 'school').
I think I would have crumbled to dust...it doesn't say Jesus looked at Peter, it says He looked straight at Peter. *shivers*
Would I have had the courage not to deny Him? I think not. No. I think not.
Thank you--join the very large club! We've all denied Him plenty. Peter is Everyman. He's probably the most rueful guy in heaven, and hence the happiest.
Peter was ready to back up his words when he drew his sword. The stand down order from the Lord was for his own good. And healing the man’s ear helped assure that none of the disciples would be lost, except Judas, so that the scriptures would be fulfilled.
Credit Peter for at least trying at the garden to stand up and fight for who and what he believed in. Even though his actions weren’t God’s will.
Ol’ Pete knew he was outnumbered, but he also knew that “my rock is El”: ZURIEL.
Favorites 17-20 36-39 45-46
36 by Guido reni probably my favorite, with 39 El Greco my second fav. But so many good ones to choose from this time.
Pete represents so many of us who ‘act first and think later so to speak. We get so busy ‘working for Christ’, defending God against the slurs of the unsaved etc, that we miss the message. . Christ had to die, he even told his disciples he had to, but Peter missed that message because he was too busy ‘defending God’ . He didn’t realize that cChrist could call down a battalion of angels to protect him if he wanted to be protected.
God is never taken by surprise. 3fen though things look bleak in the world today, with a very rapid decline in morality, where it seems evil is winning, God is in control. We tend to lose sight of that fact, at least i know I do.
We never know. A middle eastern kid was being tortured by muslim terrorists who demanded that he renounce Christ, but he refused, knowing it was his last day on earth. Lots of stories of men and women refusing to deny their savior knowing they were about to die if they didn’t.
There are stories about Martyres who sing while being burned alive, or boiled alive. (From the book of martyres). God may give supernatural strength and resolve when Needed at certain times.
Nothing so exemplifies Peter's impetuosity as on the Mount of Transfiguration, when he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. If you've been watching The Chosen, Jesus skewered him by observing that everyone usually knows what he's thinking.
To me, of all the Bible's 66 books, the one that most thematically emphasizes that "God is in control" is Daniel; and the single memorized text which most keeps me assured is Philippians 4:6-7.
