GOSPEL of LUKE
Chapter 24, Verses 13-35
Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
“What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”
He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
I HOPE VIEWERS WILL FORGIVE
my self-indulgence here in posting 129 images of this hilarious little story. It is my favorite in the entire Bible: the spectacle of the newly-risen Christ delaying His appearance before His mourning crowd of closest disciples—deliberately leaving them for endless long hours to wonder and ponder—in order to devote several hours exclusively and incognito to these two foolish dullards. He has time and attention even for me!

Good morning, Dan. (Late start today for me.)
Hi, Mary-Lou. Just walk along with Jesus, and soon you’ll be all caught up....
So many good paintings and stained glass windows to illustrate this story. I have to point the symbolist artist Daniel Bonnell (#27-28), for his vision of biblical stories. If you remember he did the magnificent Baptism of Christ, which is my favorite by him. He is a follower of the teachings of Jesus and, before starting a painting, he always reads a devotional or meditates to empty his mind and then waits for inspiration. In this Road to Emmaus, he said that “the sky is the symbol for God the Father fully embracing his Son, Jesus, who is walking along the road with two disciples.”
#30 by Jon McNaughton (he is a favorite here at FR for his portraits of President Trump)is very well done. There is a serenity that seems to neutralize the trauma of Jesus’ suffering and crucifixion, for the disciples and us.
Dore at #34 is as always unique.
Thanks for all the effort to post these. It is greatly appreciated and an awesome resource. A tip of the hat in your direction.
Dan
It was a painting I posted in the comments of the Baptism, part 1. Your picture shows a slightly different baptism, done for a church in Jerusalem.
I agree regarding the ‘joy’ and ‘labor of love’. Just a quick ‘thanks’ to you and also to let you know I use these as a resource when I teach my Sunday School kids. I’ve taught 4th grade boys for a couple decades now and find it also a ‘joy’ and ‘labor of love’. We don’t get to see all the results this side of heaven but it is encouraging when I run into one of those kids as a grown young man and they tell you what you did had a positive result.
Your Brother in Christ,
Scott (DocRock)
You've begun eternal relationships with those you've mentored--even as your mentors will await you.
At this late date, I don’t remember why I did not include it. Either I did not run across it, or else I might have judged that it did not obviously portray Jesus’ baptism. Sometimes, I do things like that.
The symbolism in that painting is sublime. It incorporates the beginning and ending of Christ’s ministry, as the body forms also a cross.
Here is a thought which interests me: Jesus Himself is well aware of Bonnell’s painting.
I would say so! He also said that sometimes he waits and waits for the inspiration to come but, when he does, he works fast. He is in tune!
Couldn’t have said it better. Agree with all your standouts.
