Chapter 9, Verses 1-8

Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus.

And Roman soldiers? No way Saul would be traveling with Roman soldiers. Jewish authoriities? Yes, but not helmeted.

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”

This is why I have such high hopes for your eventual conversion, because you seem so willing to admit your blindness. Only God's light can pierce it, as Paul and I have learned and as I pray you will, too.

I love #2 by Caravaggio. It illustrates the moment of Saul’ spiritual rebirth, on the ground, arms outstretched, blinded by celestial light but in full ecstasy of his vision. The sword and mantle are reminders of his previous identity as the persecutor of Christians. The lifted leg of the horse, seemingly to strike on Saul, while the groom tries to restrain the horse, adds tension to the scene. The dramatic use of light and shadows keeps out attention on the key figures. Caravaggio always makes one’s heart skip a beat!

We don’t know - scripture does not say. It does say we are not to “go beyond what is written”. Today’s Christianity does not know scripture for the most part, even most pastors. And much of what is taught is not found.

In Paul’s day only the very rich had horses and most of them did not have them. IF middle class had an animal to ride - it was a donkey. Our Lord Jesus walked everywhere as far as we know - many miles. It makes sense that Saul would have done the same.

I just think the addition of a horse/horses is a human addition not found in scripture and therefore should not be assumed and added.

As a new believer at 19, before I entered “the ministry”, I was soundly taught to challenge every teaching, every thought, by the written Word of God. And to not add to what is written.

I am grateful for that foundation.

While horses were a privilege only of the wealthy, it was indeed the wealthy religious establishment which commissioned and dispatched Saul--in effect, the full power of the state underwrote the venture. This, it would have seemed surprising if he and his traveling party were not provided with excellent horses. Thus, any artist failing to depict such steeds would be suspect for their omission.

Your self-proclaimed skepticism (as distinguished from cynicism) is healthy and important, and you are right to value it. Like every tool, it needs to be used carefully.

Much damage has been done to our faith by those introducing and adding both logical and common sense thoughts to scripture.

From my experience, I must question all such additions. Were horses commonly used by Jewish leaders and their guards? I don’t know, but doubt it. May research it.

Stand by my position is we should not add - even in pictures and paintings, that which is not in scripture.

While I certainly agree with the sanctity of Scripture, in certain occasions I am all in favor of adding plausible context to flesh out its stories in order to illustrate them coherently and believably. I think God has always expected that we will. The most prominent current example is the worldwide television series The Chosen (see my tagline).

Ultimately, each of us answers to our Lord. Paul, whose conversion we spectated today--and will resume tomorrow--discussed how believers must attend to their consciences and respect others'; where our conscience tells us not to view or hear or eat something, it is sin for us to do so, even when other Christians are at liberty to enjoy and indeed be edified and inspired by it.

Agree with your 2nd paragraph wholeheartedly.

I was going to mention my problems with The Chosen but didn’t.

It is well-done beyond imagination - exceptional. Most scenarios are very believable, and do not contradict scripture.

But I have 2 issues:

Over 90% of each one is “fill in”, extra-biblical - from the very creative imaginations of the writers. The majority of that is indeed supportive of scripture.

BUT those positives being said, usually what I hear from others who watch them is not how the “from scripture exactly” part impacts them. It is how something ADDED by the writers impacted them. E.g., our Lord’s discussion with Matthew on the Sermon on the Mount. Many were impacted by the Lord including Matthew.

Not only is this not supported in scripture, I believe it contradicts the words of our Lord who insisted that He did nothing He didn’t receive from His Father. He got everything directly from His Father and would never go to a yet-to-be saved and yet-to-be redeemed sinner who did not have the Holy Spirit (yet) for input for what to say.

While one may disagree with my point, my point becomes the basis now for an argument on whether the scene is plausible or not. So we are arguing about something not even in scripture, instead of asking the Holy Spirit to give us light and understanding on what IS written.

So at a minimum, we are being distracted from the words of scripture - which so few saints (and pastors) know far too little.

Second, viewers seem to be impacted by and remember the most what is creative fill-in by the writers. They are thus distracted from the impact of what is written.

Your point is subtle and good.

When Jesus inquired Why do you call me Lord but do not do what I say?, He was arguing rhetorically against the same scriptural ignorance that annoys you. If these paintings or that television show motivate a greater interest in and focus on interacting with His Word, is He not pleased thereby?

That said, I have something to add! ;-)

As I speculated on whether Paul walked, rode a donkey, camel, or horse, this passage came to mind:

Acts 23:Paul Transferred to Caesarea
23 Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, “Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen[b] to go to Caesarea at nine tonight. 24 Provide horses for Paul so that he may be taken safely to Governor Felix.”

Paul’s life is under threat by many Jews who bound themselves by a vow to kill him. The left at night and came to Antipatris. That was about 38 miles or half of the 75 miles to Caesarea.

This is the only time I see in scripture Paul upon a horse and it’s the Roman cavalry. Were the Jews to have horses, I think Rome might consider that provocative—rather like an occupied country owning tanks.

Still, I kind of wish Paul was upon a horse on his trip to Damascus. Think of the stupendous irony years later as God uses horses to save his life, compared to when Paul used them as Saul to persecute Christians!

Regardless of Saul’s manner of travel on his lengthy journey, which was so insignificant to the story it merited neither mention nor even oblique reference in the text (hence this current debate from silence), the reason this unique and momentous event was reported so fully by Luke was what actually was far more worthy of extensive discussion here. The radical transformation of Saul is rivaled in scope and purpose and drama in Scripture only by Abram’s and Moses’ (and to a lesser extent by Nebuchadnezzar’s and Jonah’s and Peter’s).

Yes. The Lord REVEALING HIMSELF to Paul, quite independent of Paul’s strong will, is the focus. Both the manner and details of this revelation are worthy of study.

I think the awesome revealing of Himself that the Lord gave to Paul was correspondent to the greatness of his calling in the spreading of the gospel to the world, as well as to the eternal value to the church of his writings - #2 only to Luke in amount.

As A.W. Tozer so well wrote in “The Pursuit of Man” (sequel to “The Pursuit of God”, it is always God who is the initiator of our salvation, and the One who seeks us first. It is all grace.
