When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. | Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) Then the disciples went back to where they were staying. |

This research and posting takes a LOT of time. Thank you Dan.
Good Morning, Dan! :-)
Yes, Leon, but it is NOT a chore. When God called me to do this, He also made me love every aspect of it. It is entirely my pleasure.
A warm greeting for you, Mary-Lou!
Very well illustrated, Dan! #4, by Burnard, captures well the emotional state of the apostles: disbelief, worry, anxiety. This is probably Burnard most famous work.
#19 by Romanelli, in the Baroque style, is just beautiful. Peter and John have entered the tomb, their figures dominate the scene. A balance of colors in the painting; the folds of their wraps contrast directionally with the folds of Jesus’ shroud, creating a unified vision that points to the Resurrection by showing us three sets of garments but only two bodies. Surprise and amazement, puzzlement yet faith well expressed on their faces.
I am so pleased that Burnand’s details are available. I could stare at Peter all day.

Understandable, Tom. A joyous subject! Haven’t we all been in John’s and Peter’s shoes, trying to run the path to apprehending the fact of Jesus’ resurrection?
Agree with all your post about the Burnand and also the Romanelli. I love how Dan posted the two Romanelli one after the other. You see the same figures dressed in the same colors, but from the opposite angle. Lovely.
When I find multiples of the same subject by one artist, usually I try to juxtapose them sequentially. So far I’ve had three-by-one several times, but I don’t recall a quad.
These are great, thank you!
Happy to provide them for you.
Love these pictures of Peter and John. What facial expressions!
