Phys.org reports that a new analysis of a skull fragment and jaw fragment found in northern China's Xujiayao archaeological site in the 1970s suggests that the fossils belonged to Denisovans. Qiaomei Fu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and her colleagues identified 18 proteins in the fossils. One of the collagen variants is found only in Denisovans, and not in Neanderthals nor modern humans. Then the researchers evaluated the shapes of the fossils and used 3D computer models to reconstruct the bones. These images were compared with fossils from Neanderthals, modern humans, and other hominins. The study suggests that Denisovans...

Well-preserved Neanderthal hand bones containing collagen have been recovered from northern Spain's Abauntz Cave, according to an IFL Science report. The bones have been radiocarbon dated to 46,000 years ago. "The cave's location is important," said Andión Arteaga of the University of Warsaw and the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution, and Mikel Arlegi of the Musée de l'Homme. "Abauntz lies along a natural corridor connecting both sides of the Pyrenees. [This makes] it a particularly interesting site for investigating how these late Neanderthal populations moved across the region and how different groups may have interacted," the researchers...

For all the progressive excitement around the bruising beatdown delivered to Donald Trump and the Republican party, Jeffries’ own backers include some of the most notorious power players in the tech industry. Jeffries has a lengthy history of groveling to some of the most divisive tech and weapons corporations on the planet. His donor list includes controversial figures like Anduril CEO Brian Schimpf and his COO Matthew Grimm, who together spent nearly $150,000 boosting Jeffries’ fundraising committees. Some might recognize Anduril as the AI weapons tech corporation co-founded by Palmer Luckey, a tech billionaire whose recent projects include a company...

President Donald Trump may have made the decision to launch the war that tanked voters’ support for the GOP and dealt them a midterm shellacking. But the historic losses are accelerating a push for someone else to take the fall: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. And the House could vote as soon as next week to impeach the Pentagon’s top leader. Many Republican lawmakers and allies alarmed by Tuesday’s wipeout are moving swiftly to pin blame for the election results on Hegseth, arguing behind the scenes that he played a chief role in convincing Trump to attack Iran with no exit...

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) issued a stark warning on Wednesday evening after Democrats flipped a Texas Senate seat and the governor’s mansion in the midterm elections. In a lengthy statement shared on social media, the GOP senator said that “Texans will be hurt” by the blue tsunami that swept across the state and country on Tuesday. “Their assault on business will make Texas a much less attractive place to start or grow a small business,” he wrote. “Texas will become more like California if they succeed in halting all new investment into AI.” State Reps. James Talarico and Gina...

A Los Angeles Police Department helicopter narrowly avoided a possible midair collision with a U.S. Navy helicopter over Echo Park Tuesday afternoon, prompting an angry warning from the police pilot over the radio. “You guys gotta pay attention, man. That’s ridiculous,” the LAPD pilot could be heard saying after maneuvering away from the approaching military aircraft. The Nov. 3 incident occurred around 2 p.m. as the police helicopter was circling above a call for service in Echo Park, according to the LAPD. In a statement, police said the helicopter crew received an air traffic alert and spotted a military helicopter...

Aliyah Symone Reese, 21, is charged with unlawful conduct toward a child. North Charleston police responded to Grace City Church on Cosgrove Avenue shortly before noon on Oct. 27 after a vehicle struck the building. This is the least I have followed politics in a two decades…and maybe that is a sign of the apathy that Republicans had yesterday. I didn’t anticipate Governor Abbott losing but it happened. Republicans need to win or lose on policy and Democrats win or lose on leader charisma. That tells me that Republican policy was bad. I never criticized Abbott before but his anti-data center talk made me change my tune. I voted for him but his negative view on data centers was dumb. Texas was doing an amazing job with data center expansion. Power prices were low because...

Socialists are moving immediately to squeeze Gov. Kathy Hochul on taxes — even as political insiders argue her re-election on Tuesday was owed more to anti-Trump backlash than to a surging left-wing in the Empire State. The Democratic Socialists of America’s New York City chapter — which saw a record-number of its members win election to the state Legislature — will turn up the heat on Hochul over hiking taxes on the wealthy and other issues, including expanding free childcare and raising the minimum wage. “I’m hopeful that Hochul has seen the energy, the excitement that can come from the...

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that the country will defend its rights under international law and refuse to submit to coercion or externally imposed demands. Pezeshkian made the remarks on Tuesday during separate meetings with the newly appointed ambassadors of Portugal, Switzerland, Türkiye and Nigeria, who presented their credentials in Tehran. Receiving Portuguese Ambassador Waltier Matias, Pezeshkian criticized misleading portrayals of Iran and its people in Western media, saying, “Many of the things published about Iran and our nation in Western media do not correspond to reality.” The president also denounced state terrorism and the targeting of scientists,...

Russia quickly adopted, mass-produced and frequently adapted the Iranian-designed Shahed attack drone during its war against Ukraine. But it took the United States about three years to deploy its own version of the drone, Ryan said. “The technology was equally available to all. What differed was institutional speed,” Ryan wrote in the assessment, titled “Fast Following: Military Emulation and Twenty-First-Century Transformation.” The report says the ability to copy an enemy’s innovations could prove as important as inventing new military technologies. During the war, Ukraine and Russia have repeatedly borrowed each other’s drone tactics. For example, Ukraine quickly adopted fiber-optic drones...

Americans bought more guns in October 2026 than the year before. Checks for gun sales through the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) rose 7.9 percent year over year, according to an industry report released Tuesday. A National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) analysis found there were more than 1.4 million sales-related checks through October. That’s up over 100,ooo.It also makes October 2026 the best post-pandemic October on record, trailing just 2020 and 2021. The nationwide sales-check spike follows localized incidents of souring NICS checks in the wake of new gun restrictions, such as in Virginia and Colorado. It...

Nithya Raman widened her lead over Karen Bass on Wednesday in the Los Angeles mayor’s race — but with only a tiny four percent of the vote counted. The Democrat Socialists of America-endorsed councilmember pulled a touch further ahead of Bass at 4pm Tuesday, as late-counted inched the ultra progressive challenger closer towards an upset over the incumbent. The latest Los Angeles County election returns showed Raman with 405,193 votes, or 51.67%, compared with Bass’s 379,069 votes, or 48.33%, a 26,124 vote advantage that further erased the incumbent’s narrow election-night lead. There is now 67% of the vote counted. At...
