Nithya Raman is projected to become Los Angeles’ next mayor after defeating incumbent Karen Bass, NBC News projects, marking a major political shift in the nation’s second-largest city.
Raman, 45, is poised to become the city’s first Indian American mayor, American Bazaar reports. Born in India, she moved to the United States as a young child and attended Harvard and MIT before becoming an urban planner.
A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Raman campaigned on homelessness, housing affordability and changing how City Hall operates. Her candidacy surprised many. Raman had endorsed Bass for reelection before announcing her own campaign just hours before the filing deadline. The two eventually advanced past former reality television personality Spencer Pratt in the June primary.
Bass faced persistent criticism over the January 2025 Palisades Fire, which began while she was in Ghana for a presidential inauguration. Twelve people died, and thousands of homes were destroyed.
But her victory also brings renewed attention to commitments made to Black Los Angeles residents. As EURweb previously reported, community leaders challenged both candidates to outline plans addressing housing, employment, public safety and economic disparities.
Both campaigns submitted written responses. Raman offered proposals involving homebuyer assistance, protections against displacement and opportunities for Black-owned businesses.
In a follow-up report, EURweb reported that the L.A. Black Agenda Coalition plans to issue annual report cards measuring the next mayor’s progress on Black homelessness, homeownership and economic opportunity. Neither candidate supplied all the specific numerical targets requested.
Raman will also inherit preparations for the 2028 Summer Olympics, putting transportation, infrastructure and public safety among the major challenges awaiting her administration.

The Karen Bass cartel openly cheated to get this incompetent as her opponent and she lost anyway. Hilarious.
Something about this person makes me think they don’t take the best interest of Americans to heart.
????????????????
So..... The new Mayor will visit Cuba more often than Bass?
Nothing to celebrate. This win only EMBOLDENS the crazy DSA and Islamic wing of the Democrats. It’s looking like relatively reasonable Dems in the mold of Bill Clinton, Joe Manchin and John Fetterman are slowly becoming extinct.
Meet the new Bass same as the old Bass.
Can she be worse than Bass? It’s a challenge but she’s probably up to it. And another socialist new citizen is elected as mayor of a major city.
I still find Raman’s LATE victory over Pratt quite suspicious.
Another “deer in the headlight” governor.
Her first priority: Rebuild the Palasaides.
sarc/.
Not hearing any outcry from “regular” Democrats or the usual activists from the 13% community about Bass’s defeat. When a black liberal politician loses there’s always accusations flying around from them. Total silence. It means they all knew the fix was in for Raman.
Can she be worse than Bass? It’s a challenge but she’s probably up to it.
This is just too funny. Los Angeles went from bad to even worse.
The Commie got out-Commied by the bigger Commie...
AS SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCES LIKE BEFORE OR HIGH DENSE UNITS WITH 20% or more for “HOMELESS PERSONS”.
JUST WHO WILL PAY THE UTILITIES FOR “HOMELESS PERSONS’ IN THE PALISADES>???
Well LA, if you’re going flush, then flush big!
Give it time. The results were just released, right?
