NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A woman has been arrested after crashing into a North Charleston church with her young child in the vehicle, authorities say.
Aliyah Symone Reese, 21, is charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.
North Charleston police responded to Grace City Church on Cosgrove Avenue shortly before noon on Oct. 27 after a vehicle struck the building.
Officers found Reese standing near a vehicle with significant front-end damage. Her young child was also at the scene. Both reportedly appeared extremely distraught.
Reese told officers she had encountered the child’s father and his new girlfriend at a nearby convenience store. She said the woman spit on her and that both people attacked her.
Reese said she fled after the altercation but lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the church wall.
Police said surveillance footage from the convenience store and the church showed a different account.
According to the police report, the footage appeared to show a mutual physical altercation between Reese and the other woman outside the store.
Afterward, the woman and the child’s father walked toward the church.
Investigators said the video then showed Reese getting into her vehicle and driving around the corner.
The officer who reviewed the footage reported that Reese appeared to drive toward the two people in an attempt to strike them.
The vehicle missed both people and continued into the church, causing disabling damage to the building.
Charleston County EMS evaluated Reese’s child at the scene. Relatives then took the child to a hospital for further medical treatment.
Reese turned herself in at North Charleston City Hall on Tuesday, where she was served with an arrest warrant.
