A Los Angeles Police Department helicopter narrowly avoided a possible midair collision with a U.S. Navy helicopter over Echo Park Tuesday afternoon, prompting an angry warning from the police pilot over the radio.
“You guys gotta pay attention, man. That’s ridiculous,” the LAPD pilot could be heard saying after maneuvering away from the approaching military aircraft.
The Nov. 3 incident occurred around 2 p.m. as the police helicopter was circling above a call for service in Echo Park, according to the LAPD.
In a statement, police said the helicopter crew received an air traffic alert and spotted a military helicopter approaching its location.
The LAPD crew attempted to contact the military aircraft over a common aviation frequency but received no response.
“When the military helicopter did not respond on that frequency, the LAPD airship, out of an abundance of caution, changed its flight profile,” the department said. “After the military helicopter passed, the LAPD airship resumed its orbit.”

“Here’s a phrase that apparently the airlines simply made up: near miss. They say that if 2 planes almost collide, it’s a near miss. Bullsh__, my friend. It’s a near hit! A collision is a near miss.
[WHAM! CRUNCH!]
“Look, they nearly missed!”
“Yes, but not quite.”
― George Carlin
From what I recall seeing of the LAPD helos, they fly around like they own the airspace.
Odd given the crash in Nepal the other day.
