Russia quickly adopted, mass-produced and frequently adapted the Iranian-designed Shahed attack drone during its war against Ukraine. But it took the United States about three years to deploy its own version of the drone, Ryan said. “The technology was equally available to all. What differed was institutional speed,” Ryan wrote in the assessment, titled “Fast Following: Military Emulation and Twenty-First-Century Transformation.” The report says the ability to copy an enemy’s innovations could prove as important as inventing new military technologies. During the war, Ukraine and Russia have repeatedly borrowed each other’s drone tactics. For example, Ukraine quickly adopted fiber-optic drones after Russian models showed they could overcome electronic jamming. “Because imitation cycles are now often measured in weeks, and sometimes days, very few first-mover advantages endure in modern war,” Ryan wrote. Ryan warned that China, Russia, Iran and North Korea also are increasingly working together as a network, sharing technology and lessons that could be used against U.S. forces in future conflicts.

Bureaucrats gotta get their beaks wet.
Not much profit selling a $40K drone for $50K. Better to sell a $500K missile for $3M and use it to shoot down the enemy’s $50K drone...
Do y:all remember the last time we were in some kind of technical pole climbing contest?
Does Star Wars come to mind?
We outspent the USSR. Now it seems we are in similar things today.
Whatever S&S is babbling about I just remember the vast group of waves overseas loving this liberal spinner. Yawn
Doesn’t the buyer and domestic and global competition have any say?
Stars and Stripes is no longer trustworthy. It’s just a propaganda rag now.
Had no idea what a garbage paper S&S was until I deployed as a civilian 10 years ago and read it a couple times.
It is good for cage liner, or fire starter.

Elon could have done it in six months. The govt bureaucrats would drag it out for years, and finally put a stop to it because it could threaten some obscure mudbug in California.

“The core idea here is that advantage lies not in the original idea but in the speed and skill with which it is copied, adapted and enhanced,” said Mick Ryan, a retired Australian army general and author of the study, which examines the race to emulate military innovations.
Small drones will be obsolete in the near future. We are investing in countermeasures and unmanned systems that actually have multiple functions.
Everybody is hung up on these cheap drones but their impact on the battlefield even now has decreased significantly. They are easily defeated.
“They [drones] are easily defeated.”
Are flocks of thousands of them easily defeated?
Wonder if cheap consumer drones with cameras and GPS can allow an individual bad guy to create a guided weapon.
Which nation launched the first satellite into orbit ?
Which nation launched the first ARMED satellite into orbit (and tested it successfully right above our heads) ?

No 'creative' abilities needed. You can buy a drone that is equipped with Cameras, GPS, and a package release that will drop a small package when the remote operator decides to do so. The drones cost less than $100.
There are many nations that use aeroplane type drones (because they can carry heavier loads) that deliver lifesaving supplies (food and medicine) to people that live in isolated areas. The planes deliver and return back to their launch area all by remote control or pre-programming.
Now, addressing the original comment that the drones are easily defeated, NO, they are not.
Neither are they easily able to navigate to the target and deliver their payload. They send 100 drones to a target, but only 3 actually get there and only 1 delivers it's payload. Some of the drones don't even have payloads, they are there to draw the fire away from the few weaponized units.
All along the way to the target there are multiple tactics used to avoid the defenses. Each tactic used usually causes a modification of the defenses to deal with new tactics.
The whole thing is a very elaborate game of cat and mouse and what works one day most likely won't work the next. Both sides adapt. They have no choice. Neither side finds it 'easy' nor 'cheap'.

Drones are easily defeated. 80% of drone attacks are unsuccessful or they instead divert to a very low priority target (like a single soldier). Cheap Drones can be jammed and directed microwaves simply destroy their electronics in flight. These cheap drones also have a very limited range and the operators can be located, triangulated and attacked because of the RF signal they broadcast.
People get a distorted view of drone warfare from the media (especially YouTube), where you will never see videos of the many drone attacks that were failures.
