Previous studies by Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers showed that psychedelic treatment with psilocybin relieved major depressive disorder symptoms in adults for up to a month. Now, in a follow-up study of those participants, the researchers report that the substantial antidepressant effects of psilocybin-assisted therapy, given with supportive psychotherapy, may last at least a year for some patients. A report on the new study was published on Feb. 15, 2022 in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. "Our findings add to evidence that, under carefully controlled conditions, this is a promising therapeutic approach that can lead to significant and durable improvements in depression,"...

Nearly 1,500 New York City municipal workers have been fired over their refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19. That number represents less than 1% of the city's workforce, but it appears to be the country's largest workforce reduction linked to COVID vaccines. Under a mandate set by former Mayor Bill de Blasio, city employees on leave without pay and those who were newly hired had been told they had until Friday, Feb. 11., to show proof of vaccination or they would face termination. The workers on leave had to submit proof of their first dose and would then have 45...

On Tuesday, February 22, Asteroid (455176) 1999 VF22 will fly past Earth at around 2:54 am EST. This object is classified as "potentially hazardous" as it gets near our planet and is fairly large, but next week's flyby is perfectly safe. The space rock won’t get closer than 5,366,000 kilometers (3,334,000 miles) – that’s almost 14 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon. NASA’s Small-Body Database gives an absolute magnitude for the object of 20.7, but without an albedo – the fraction of reflected light by the surface – it is very difficult to estimate its true size....

Sick and All AloneIt shouldn’t be needed, but it is. Florida governor Ron DeSantis has introduced a patient protection bill, so that ‘if you’re in a hospital or long-term care facility, you have a right to have your loved ones there present with you.’ Every other state and country will hopefully follow. Some places have even prevented the dying from dying in the company and warmth of loved ones.Reacting to the Governors bill, Brownstone scholar Dr. Jay Bhattacharya tweeted: “Perhaps the cruelest lockdown policy: preventing people from visiting their sick loved ones in hospitals or long-term care facilities”Many people commented...

A new preclinical study has demonstrated how an experimental drug can treat type 2 diabetes by increasing the expression of a recently discovered protein found to influence insulin signaling in cells. Across several mouse studies, the research shows the novel compound improved aspects of metabolic syndrome associated with diabetes. In the early 2000s, a protein dubbed SWELL1 was identified and it was initially thought to solely play a role in lymphocyte function. Around a decade later, researchers discovered SWELL1 also influences insulin signaling in many tissues across the body. Subsequent study revealed SWELL1 activity is vital for normal insulin secretion...

New York Times economist Paul Krugman spewed bile at the so-called “vandalism” by Canadian truckers protesting the country’s draconian COVID-19 policies. He did this while dismissing the 2020 Marxist Black Lives Matter riots across the U.S. that reportedly caused at least around $2 billion in damages. Krugman flailed that the Canadian truckers were engaged in “economic vandalism and intimidation,” and compared the movement to “a slow-motion Jan. 6, a disruption caused by a relatively small number of activists, many of them right-wing extremists.” His hyperbole-laced rant of an op-ed, headlined “When ‘Freedom’ Means the Right to Destroy,” buried the extent...

Since 1947, just two years after the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has maintained what is known as a "Doomsday Clock." This clock is reset annually and is supposed to measure approximately how close the world is to the apocalypse due to a man-made catastrophe, with midnight representing the apocalypse and however many minutes before midnight representing how close mankind is to causing it. Today, as I learn that the U.S. national debt has just eclipsed $30 trillion, it appears more and more likely by the day that our country is...

After a highly publicized two-week pinch-on-the-wrist suspension for displaying her ignorance, trivializing and distorting the Shoah, (Holocaust) on the chick chat show, The View, Caryn Elaine Johnson, AKA Whoopi Goldberg, returned to a highly publicized, rousing welcome from her like-minded co-hosts.Emerging from exile for a highly publicized non-apology apology on Stephen Colbert's lefty gabfest, Johnson/Goldberg confirmed she still hasn't learned anything.
