NATIONAL GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE DAY

On June 11 we celebrate the delicious food holiday known as National German Chocolate Cake Day! We can't think of a better way to learn about a cake with American roots and get our chocolate fix for the day at the same time!

#GermanChocolateCakeDay

Although the name may sound like the cake originated in Germany, German chocolate cake did not. In fact, the cake's roots can be traced back to 1852 when American Sam German made a type of dark baking chocolate for the American Baker’s Chocolate Company. Baker’s German Sweet Chocolate’s brand was named in honor of Sam German.

Over 100 years later in 1957, a recipe for “German’s Chocolate Cake” appeared as the Recipe of the Day in the Dallas Morning Star. This recipe, created by Mrs. George Clay, used Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate. Obviously, it became quite popular. During this time, General Foods owned Baker’s brand and distributed Mrs. Clay's recipe to other newspapers around the country. The current name of German Chocolate Cake, as we know it today, came to be as publications started dropping the 's.

Love it, especially the coconut on top - a little goes a long way.

Unfortunately, most in my family are not chocolate lovers and prefer vanilla or fruit-based desserts.

Testing 1-2-3 chocolate cake was a code my dad used to do when he was operating a ham radio station out of a remote island in the Pacific and my mom would hear that on the shortwave at a specific time and know it was him. I thought that was kind of cute and I do remember that we got that radio signal pretty well even though he was thousands of miles away on the Tern island atoll.

I’ve often thought about opening a bakery. My wife says I’m too old and lazy and I’d just eat up half of it anyway....
