Scientists Explain Chocolate Cravings

If that craving for chocolate sometimes feels like it is coming from deep in your gut, that's because maybe it is.

A small study links the type of bacteria living in people's digestive system to a desire for chocolate. Everyone has a vast community of microbes in their guts. But people who crave daily chocolate show signs of having different colonies of bacteria than people who are immune to chocolate's allure.

That may be the case for other foods, too. The idea could eventually lead to treating some types of obesity by changing the composition of the trillions of bacteria occupying the intestines and stomach, said Sunil Kochhar, co-author of the study. It appears Friday in the peer-reviewed Journal of Proteome Research.

Kochhar is in charge of metabolism research at the Nestle Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland. The food conglomerate Nestle SA paid for the study. But this isn't part of an effort to convert a few to the dark side (or even milk) side of cocoa, Kocchar said.

"In fact, the study was delayed because it took a year for the researchers to find 11 men who don't eat chocolate."

So a course of antibiotics that target the “chocolate” bacteria would remove chocolate cravings?

Or maybe Nestle’s is going to start sneaking the bacteria into us.

Did they ever find any women who don’t like chocolate?

Then what did people do thousands of years ago before chocolate was first created? Maybe that's why they had such short lifespans...

My wife doesn’t eat chocolate. It makes her ill. But I make up for her and consume her share to help support world chocolate prices. Its the right thing to do after all.

I don’t want to be cured of this! I am hard core-85% and sometimes even unsweetened and dark beer which tastes like chocolate. I think I have a serious case of this.

The world can go to hell in a hand basket but as long as I have a piece of chocolate daily I can ignore the nastiness and go on with business as usual.

I don’t think they looked very hard for people who don’t care for chocolate. I like it, but my wife doesn’t and neither do any of her 11 siblings.

I only buy those 72-ounce bags of chocolate chips at Costco to make gifts for others. Honest.

By the way, Costco currently has a $2.50 coupon on those bags, making them insanely cheap.

Also, if you ask at the customer service desk you can get another coupon book. I'm told.

“But people who crave daily chocolate show signs of having different colonies of bacteria than people who are immune to chocolate’s allure”

Wasn’t that the plot of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”?

There was also a very good ‘B’ movie starring the wrestler, Rowdy Roddy Pipper.

And another movie with Johnny Depp? I think it was called the Astronaut’s Wife.

Life imitates art.

So far so good. I’m off Chocolate for about 5 months.

The lost weight has mysteriously begun to return. Maybe it wasn’t the culprit.
