Salmonella scare sparks Hershey recall

Last Updated: Sunday, November 12, 2006 | 9:17 AM ET
CBC News

Hershey Canada has recalled many chocolate bars and baking products — including Hershey bars, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Oh Henry! bars — because they may be tainted with salmonella.

Hershey Canada Inc. and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) released a list on Sunday of 25 products they say could be contaminated with the bacteria.

Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but the bacteria can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the candy or chocolate chips on the recall list, the company said.

But the agency is warning people not to eat any of those products, which are listed on its website.

The company's plant in Smith Falls, Ont., was closed Friday after the salmonella was discovered.

The company, which is based in Mississauga, Ont., said the products carry dates between Oct. 15 and Nov. 10. It said they do not include candy sold in bags for Halloween or Christmas items.

CFIA said the products were sold across Canada and that Hershey is voluntarily recalling them from the marketplace

I thought the metal filings had to do with an acetominophen recall, but maybe this is a separate incident?

Thank go it happened in canada.

I was a convenience store earlier today and bought a Reese' Butter Butter Cup.

I really don't need salmonella.

I'm still sick about the Dems winning last Tuesday.

"I'm still sick about the Dems winning last Tuesday."
I'm not too sure of that...I was thinking, having the Senate and House, though by a slim majority MAY totally destroy their chances for the Presidency in '08.
For the next two years they'll be on display for the whole world to see.
They'll have to try to walk the tightrope between the crazies, left-wing socialists, whatever moderates voted for them, swing voters that went for a "change in the direction of the war" and people who just wanted a change in hopes of something happening that they would like.

"You can fool some people all the time, and all the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time"

I fully expect the dumbocrats to self-destruct...

I would think the problem on the Hershey Highway would more likely be E. coli rather than salmonella.

I can handle changing my Depends® more often…it's the diarrhea of the wallet, sold as going after the rich, but leaves the burden of vote buying on those who can't comprehend the abomination we call our Tax Code, let alone afford to hire an army of Armani suited lawyers and CPAs to find loop holes they can sail their yachts through.
