Mark 1:7–11 Friends, today's Gospel tells the story of the baptism of Jesus. The first thing we must keep in mind about the baptism of Jesus was that it was embarrassing. Here is the one that the first Christians maintained was the Son of God, the sinless lamb who takes away the sins of the world, the Word made flesh. So why is he seeking a baptism of repentance? There is no way around it: John was working in the country north of Jerusalem, along the banks of the Jordan river. And his theme was unambiguous: repent. Those who came to...

There is new evidence that a 50-year-old blood pressure drug could find new purpose as a treatment to mitigate PTSD, scientists say. Clonidine is commonly used as a high blood pressure medication and for ADHD. It's also already been studied in PTSD because clonidine works on adrenergic receptors in the brain, likely best known for their role in "fight or flight," a heightened state of response that helps keep us safe. These receptors are thought to be activated in PTSD and to have a role in consolidating a traumatic memory. Clonidine's sister drug guanfacine, which also activates these receptors, also...

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The nation is in shock today following reports of representatives in Congress showing up to work for the 4th day in a row. Sources in Washington say this may be a new record, as most members of the House are used to showing up maybe once or twice per month while spending most of their time drinking cocktails with lobbyists and talking to CNN. Medical personnel has been dispatched to the Capitol Building to tend to any elderly reps in attendance, who aren't used to working this hard, while experts warn many of them may not last...

“How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness, how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?” —Dr. Seuss Here we are at that time again where I get out my prediction hat and give my replay of the year past, but also my predictions for the year ahead. These are just MY predictions based on my understanding of both geopolitical and biblical goings-on. I'm not a prophet, nor the son of a prophet. Neither am I a date-setter, or the son of...

WASHINGTON — White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wouldn’t commit to meeting New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ request for $1 billion to handle the migrant influx into the city while seeming to acknowledge that the Big Apple has become a “border city” after record-breaking illegal border crossings. Jean-Pierre name-dropped Adams at her regular briefing, noting that he “has been critical … of us” before touting a new “parole” program to facilitate a lawful 30,000 migrants per month from four countries in a bid to reduce illegal entries — without noting his persistent request for more federal funds. The Post...

The House of Representatives voted to adjourn until 10 p.m. Friday, shortly after Republican California Rep. Kevin McCarthy flipped the votes of 15 of his GOP detractors. Republican leaders called for the vote, which passed along party lines, to give McCarthy supporters Ken Buck of Colorado and Wesley Hunt of Texas time to return to the Capitol. Buck was absent for the early votes due to a medical issue, while Hunt returned home following the birth of his son. (RELATED: Here’s Why 15 Republicans Flipped Their Support To Kevin McCarthy) McCarthy peeled off 14 “no” votes on the twelfth ballot...

Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital have found a way to use cancer cells to fight cancer. In a study published in Science Translational Medicine, the team led by Khalid Shah demonstrated that their cell therapy could eliminate established tumors and create long-term immunity in an advanced mouse model of glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. The vaccine works by training the immune system to prevent cancer from returning. These results are encouraging and suggest that this approach may be effective in treating cancer in humans. Dual-action cell therapy engineered to eliminate established tumors and train the immune system to...

TALLAHASSEE — Amid a fierce national debate about immigration issues, Florida next week will try to convince a U.S. district judge that the Biden administration is violating federal laws through policies that lead to releasing undocumented immigrants. Pensacola-based U.S. District Judge T. Kent Wetherell is scheduled to begin a trial Monday in a lawsuit that Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody filed against the Biden administration in 2021. Florida contends that the administration’s policies result in undocumented immigrants flowing into the state, increasing costs for services such as prisons, schools and health care. Moody also argues that undocumented immigrants cause public-safety...

Donald Trump Jr. praised Conservative Republicans on Friday for achieving the “best deal” conservatives “have ever” received from GOP leadership as Republicans begin to coalesce behind Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for Speaker of the House. “Proud of my conservative friends in the house who just won the best deal the right has ever gotten from Republican Leadership,” he wrote. “We need to put petty personal disputes aside & do what’s best for the movement. This is a transformational deal that will change Congress for the better!” Proud of my conservative friends in the house who just won the best deal...

.. OK, back to business for the first SitRep of 2023. Here’s what’s on tap for the day: an inside look at whether Russia’s military mobilizations will make a difference on the battlefield, France’s decision to supply Ukraine with light tanks, and how the vote-a-rama drama over the U.S. House speaker race affects national security. ...When quantity is a quality of its own. Still, the mobilization could pay off in the long run if Russia can sort out how to effectively train and resupply a steady stream of new troops—still a big “if.”...

There's a lot of alarmism going on right now about the race for speaker of the House. Many are calling it a crisis or a "three-ring circus." What it is really is the first sign that the reckoning and subsequent healing needed among Republicans may finally be upon us. There is a huge split within the Republican Party. The party establishment sees an America that's fundamentally the same as it was in 1985 and has a policy agenda fit for just that moment. These Republicans still see big business as their allies. They equate policies that help big business with...

When the House Jan. 6 committee released hundreds of documents from its investigation online at the end of the year, it inadvertently made public nearly 2,000 Social Security numbers belonging to high profile individuals who visited the White House in December 2020, according to a report. The Washington Post reported Friday that the leaked Social Security information was included in a spreadsheet buried within the "massive cache" of records from the committee's work. Social Security numbers belonging to at least three members of Trump's cabinet, a few Republican governors, and several Trump associates were reportedly compromised. The data was part...

Embattled Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who has come under fire recently for basically being terrible at his job, has also been criticized for his regular use of private government jets, a practice he tried to defend during an appearance on Fox News. It did not go well. “You’ve been a big advocate for the environment—the administration’s climate change policy. What do you say to people who ask, is it environmentally responsible to fly on private government jets when commercial options are available?” host Bret Baier asked. “Well, when we’re making a decision about what kind of aircraft to use, we...
