Europe is preparing to occupy the tiny nation of Moldova with the first group of Nato troops ready for a "landing" in Ukraine's Odessa, Russian news agency Sputnik reported on Tuesday, citing the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR). Moldovan authorities, meanwhile, have arrested 74 people in connection with an alleged Moscow-backed plot to stage a mass uprising in the former soviet European nation. Is Moldova becoming the latest flashpoint in Europe's battle with Russia? The raids come ahead of Moldova's September 28 elections, amid claims of rigging, Russian backing for a party, and Putin's alleged plot to "hijack the polls"....

Britain’s Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper warned Russia that NATO’s “combined strength is unparalleled”, that “reckless” aerial provocations should end, and that British jets can “confront” Russian aircraft that in NATO airspace. The United Nations Security Council sat for what it said was the 10,002nd time on Monday, ahead of a greater gathering for the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, for an extraordinary meeting called by Estonia to discuss “threats to international peace and security”. The meeting was called in response to the incursion by fast jets of the Russian Federation — a permanent member of the Security Council, of course —...

Baltic incidents—drones, airspace brushes, GNSS spoofing—could cascade into a NATO–Russia war driven by fear, honor, and interest. Opening phases likely favor NATO in air and sea with superior ISR, EW, and standoff fires; Russia counters with missiles, dense air defenses, cyber, and navigation attacks. Two plausible endgames emerge: a non-nuclear grind to an armistice shaped by attrition and political risk, or limited nuclear use to coerce termination, shattering the taboo and accelerating crisis instability.

Russia's state oil and gas sales in September are set to fall by around 23% from a year earlier on lower prices and a stronger rouble, Reuters calculations show, hitting Moscow's biggest source of revenue. The projected decline comes as President Vladimir Putin and his economic officials are preparing Russia's 2026 budget while funding its highest military spending since the Cold War.

This is an excellent 32 minute history lesson on the conflict between the Baltic Countries, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia vs Russia. It's the best summary that I have found.

The 9 September events demonstrate two interlocking realities. First, the prospect of a NATO–Russia war is no longer an abstraction. Moscow has shown a willingness to test NATO directly. Second, the most likely path to such a conflict is not through deliberate escalation but through miscalculation. The means to a wider war exist; the question is which one. Technical failure, human error, or political panic could cause escalation to spiral in a single instant.

For about 30 hours, the illusion of transatlantic unity over Ukraine was maintained. Europe and Ukraine had demanded a deal on the 30-day unconditional ceasefire the Trump administration proposed two months earlier. European leaders said US President Donald Trump had personally backed their plan – and threat of sanctions if Russia declined to sign up by Monday – in a Saturday phone call, a picture of which they posted online from Kyiv. Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, even joined a chorus of US allies demanding Russia adhere to the ceasefire demand. But then Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke,...

Ukrainian drones have attacked a pumping station responsible for transporting oil through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC). This is not a Russian asset; the oil in this pipeline is classified as international property, belonging in various proportions to multiple companies, primarily American and European. The pipeline transports oil from Kazakhstan’s major oil projects—Tengiz, Karachaganak, and Kashagan. In 2024, American businesses accounted for over 40% of CPC oil shipments, and together with other Western companies, their total share exceeded 65%. The neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv was well aware of this. And despite its extreme dependence on Washington, it deliberately struck American...

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has slammed the Paris emergency summit on the Ukraine war as a gathering of "frustrated European politicians," accusing leaders invited by French President Emmanuel Macron of looking to prolong the conflict. "So today, supporters of the war, anti-Trump and frustrated European politicians are gathering in Paris to prevent a peace agreement with Ukraine," the minister was quoted as saying by Hungarian state news agency MTI, at a press conference in the Kazakh capital Astana on Monday. Macron's guests, which include the leaders of Germany, United Kingdom, Italy and Poland, had always advocated war between Russia...

Senator Richard Blumenthal condemned Hegseth’s message, calling it a "surrender & betrayal" of Ukraine. Blumenthal, who has made six visits to Ukraine during its fight against Russia, argued that the message amounted to abandoning Ukraine and undermining the security of European allies. .. Donald Trump's peace plan for the Ukraine/Russia conflict is coming under fire from some entertaining quarters. There is, of course, the domestic whining from the likes of John Bolton, who said “I think we know exactly what's gonna happen. President Trump has effectively surrendered to Putin before the negotiations have even begun.” I asked Grok what Bolton's solution to the conflict and it said this: No Negotiations with Russia: At various times, Bolton has argued against negotiating with Russia from a position of anything less than strength. He believes that as long as the conflict can be won militarily, talks...

Kyiv has finally turned off Russia’s gas supply to Europe, ending a source of income that helped pay for Moscow’s war against Ukraine. The decades-old deal, which allowed the transit of natural gas produced by Russian energy giant Gazprom through Ukraine, ended at midnight on December 31, shutting down Russia’s last major gas corridor to Europe. Europe’s dependence on Russian energy had already drastically reduced since the invasion in February 2022, so the gesture is mostly symbolic. But it doesn’t make the decision less important or mean there are no consequences for the remaining Gazprom customers in Europe.

Ukrainian media sources report that the U.S.-funded Ukrainian military and security apparatus trained the Islamist rebels currently advancing in Syria. Turkey-backed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly the al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra, is leading the offensive against the forces of Russia-backed President Bashar al-Assad in Aleppo, seizing swathes of territory.
