Ukraine closure of Gazprom pipeline to Europe hurts Russia’s war effort but leaves Transnistrians in
The Conversation ^

Kyiv has finally turned off Russia’s gas supply to Europe, ending a source of income that helped pay for Moscow’s war against Ukraine. The decades-old deal, which allowed the transit of natural gas produced by Russian energy giant Gazprom through Ukraine, ended at midnight on December 31, shutting down Russia’s last major gas corridor to Europe.

Europe’s dependence on Russian energy had already drastically reduced since the invasion in February 2022, so the gesture is mostly symbolic. But it doesn’t make the decision less important or mean there are no consequences for the remaining Gazprom customers in Europe.

Excellent. This alone will cost Kremlin's GaZZprom about 5 billion dollars in lost revenue - per year - further reducing the company’s tax contributions to the Russian budget...

Thus the Russians people will have to pay more taxes (new hikes). Plus the extreme inflation going on... officially 9% but more like 30% for real life citizens buying everyday food. This all means great discontempt against their warmongers mismanaging Russia from their Ivory tower in Moscow.

Russia has no leverage on the EU anymore. Europe doesn't need the oil imported from Russia anymore. Putin botched his only card he had to force the EU into submission - thanks to his failed and illegal war against Ukraine.

In a way... Ukraine SAVED Europe. It made Europe independent from Russia again!

Communist (and thus pro Putin) prime minister Robert Fico of Slovakia is dependent on that pipine... It seems that those very few countries who followed Putin are all in a big financial crisis now...

It’s not the Russians. It’s Europeans kissing their ring while the US protects them.

It’s also hurting Europe and Ukraine, but Trump will be less prone to bail them out.

Ukraine needs to stop wasting its citizens’ lives and making the survivors suffer. It has lost and it’s not going to change.

There’s plenty of natural gas the EU isn’t buying that can be used to keep Russian homes warm.

As for money, the Russians can buy the machine tools and electronic chips it doesn’t make itself from China using gold.

The USSR had very little western currency coming in during its existence.

Most Russian apartments simply don’t have the room for a never-ending stream of Chinese-made chattels from Amazon.

A tiny apartment, a kid sleeping in the living room, bread, meat and heat, what more could an average Russian hope to get?

Hm, that’s a typical reaction from an emotional employee who just got triggered while working at a Russian troll farm in St. Petersburg.

Is the Kremlin still paying you 400 dollars a month?
You must ask for a raise.

Ukraine Putin's Russia needs to stop wasting its citizens’ lives and making the survivors suffer. It has lost and it’s not going to change.

Applies also to Putin's buddy, Kim Jong Un.

Two - count 'em: TWO - nuclear dictatorships conducting a war of aggression against a peaceful, non-nuclear European nation, yet some Americans continue to side with the invaders.

Disgusting!

Russia loses 5 but will recoup elsewhere. Ukraine will lose 1 billion annually in fees and all EU economies are stressed by it, too.

Good point. Evil is always a stupid choice, imo.

I have a feeling you are upset.

I thought the very few pro russians here would be happy about the article I posted. Because less Russian gas to Europe was supposed to make its EU citizens “shiver in cold” during winter times... Right?

You remember those Kremlin commercials mocking the supposedly “incoming big freeze” in Europe... It didn’t aged well did it? :) Rather, what a spectacular backfire against the Kremlin.

The EU can now say : HE WHO LAUGHS LAST, LAUGHS BEST!

Russians are freezing as Soviet-era infrastructure in the country crumbles — and Moscow keeps spending on war:

In February 2024 already (now it’s way worse):
https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-winter-freeze-soviet-infrastructure-heating-fails-war-spending-2024-2

Heating systems are breaking down in Russia’s harsh winter, leaving many people freezing.

Much of Russia’s Soviet-era infrastructure needs modernizing.

But Russia is splurging on war rather than public utilities.

Go post your socialist bilge somewhere else.

17 more days and your globohomo, grifter god's gravy train screeches to a halt.

Only a sad, pathetic oaf would take pleasure in the suffering of others.

In all your posts concerning the Russian invasion of Ukraine, you have consistently delighted only in minimizing Ukrainian victories, exaggerating Russian advances, reveling in the suffering of the Ukrainian people, and insulting FReepers who hold an opposing stance.

By your own statement, you yourself are a "sad, pathetic oaf."
