Republican Sen. Ashley Moody defeated Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon in Florida’s special U.S. Senate election Tuesday, Decision Desk HQ projected shortly after the final polls closed.
With more than 90 percent of votes counted, Moody led with roughly 50.2 percent to Nixon’s 48.7 percent, a margin of about 115,000 votes, according to multiple tallies. Independent candidate Neil Gillespie received about 1 percent. The result keeps the seat in Republican hands through early 2029, the remainder of the term Marco Rubio vacated to become secretary of state.
Moody, appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in January 2025 after serving two terms as Florida’s attorney general, entered the race with a clear advantage in fundraising and pre-election polling. Surveys throughout the fall showed her leading by an average of 5 to 7 points in a state former President Donald Trump carried by 13 points in 2024.
The race drew sharp contrasts on abortion. Moody has described herself as “pro-life, unabashedly so.” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America awarded her an A+ rating, citing her consistent votes to protect the unborn and stop forced taxpayer funding of abortion. As a senator she cosponsored the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, saying she was “proud to cast my very first vote as Florida’s newest U.S. Senator in support of this important legislation.” As attorney general she opposed a 2024 ballot measure that would have expanded abortion access, arguing its summary would mislead voters.
Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, supports abortion without gestational limits. Her campaign website lists “Protecting reproductive freedom” as a priority and defines that goal as “the right to abortion, contraception, and IVF, free from political interference.” That formulation rejects limits on late-term abortion, parental notification requirements and basic safety measures such as ultrasounds.
In a video clip that surfaced during the campaign, Nixon warned that legislation treating a fetus or zygote as a person with basic rights “that’s going to be devastating.” She also worked to strip funding from Strong Florida Moms, a state pregnancy-resource website that provides information on prenatal care and parenting without directing women toward abortion. Nixon said the site’s backers “basically want to encourage people to not go through with abortions” and offered an amendment to remove its funding.
Pro-life advocates said Moody’s victory blocks an opponent who would have opposed virtually every protection for unborn children. Nixon voted against Florida’s six-week abortion limit and other measures defending life in the womb while serving in the state House.
Moody’s campaign emphasized law enforcement, border security and support for President Trump’s agenda. She will return to the Senate to complete the special term that ends in January 2029.

Commie Angie Nixon must be crashing out right now...
According to Angie, this proves that Florida voters are racist.
We should enjoy it while it lasts tonight. This is not going to be a good evening.
[Ashley Moody Defeats Angie Nixon]
Angie,
Angie,
When will those clouds all disappear?
Much to close for someone as vile as Nixon in FL. SMH
Why was it so close?
Why was it so close?
Good news.
They cheat.
How could you do that to the Rolling Stones?
Exactly. The Decision Desk just called the Florida governor's race for Donalds, with an even closer margin. I just pray for good results in the Michigan and Texas races.
Ashley won but by a couple point less than she lead in the polls.
Ditto Byron Donalds running for Gov. of Florida.
Let’s see what happens elsewhere.
Good news.
Time for a ballot dump to put Nixon ahead.
Would like to hope that New Hampshire slips behind the screen and Sununu takes the former senate seat!
Hehehe
Actually one of my favorite songs by them
It’s the first thing I think of when I see that name
“Why was it so close?”
Lot of reasons probably.
For one, Republicans as usual didn’t provide much of a reason to vote for them this last two years.
Based on my local anecdotal evidence, I believe the Democrats orchestrated a massive get out the vote effort quietly and effectively.
I’ll take it Michigan is the key though
