While it technically started a few years ago, Latin America's rightward swing has been a hot topic in recent months. Most recently, we watched voters in Brazil defy the predictions and vote for Donald Trump ally Flávio Bolsonaro when the incumbent little socialist dictator Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had been leading the polls for quite a while. The two will match up in a runoff at the end of the month, and while the left is doing its best to go after the Bolsonaro family, the odds are in Flávio's favor. Before that, Colombia rejected its first dance with...

Two container ships near the strait of Hormuz have sunk after being struck by missiles, amid the sharpest rise in Iranian attacks on shipping since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran. The increase in attacks suggests Iran is trying to fully close the strategic waterway in an attempt to frustrate Donald Trump’s efforts to bring down fuel prices before the US midterm elections on 3 November. The Trump administration has been attempting to deflect attention from the economic impact of the war on Iran by blaming Ukraine’s attacks on Russian refineries for increased fuel prices.

Limitations on Ukraine’s access to military-grade Starlink terminals sparked panic among its officials and several U.S. lawmakers In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Denys Sienik, the top Ukrainian diplomat in Washington, D.C., sent a frantic message to U.S. lawmakers: Ukraine was suddenly facing restrictions on its military-grade Starlink terminals, and he didn’t know why. The change, Sienik warned, would give Russia an upper hand in the war and make it tougher for Kyiv to intercept strikes against Ukrainian civilians. By the time Washington’s morning rush hour was under way, other Ukrainian officials were already suspecting the worst: that President...

SEATTLE — If you stand between Second Avenue and Bell and Blanchard streets, you can glimpse Seattle’s rock 'n' roll past. The area was home to the Crocodile Cafe and Mama’s Mexican Kitchen. Today, a daytime open-air drug market and a sidewalk encampment have taken shape nearby, with several business owners saying they are afraid to speak on the record about what they described as a recent trend. Wilson also said the city is working on neighborhood-based public safety plans. She named Belltown among neighborhoods with persistent safety concerns and said long-term progress requires addressing root causes as well as...

The alleged assault at UChicago took place in the early hours of Sunday during a rowdy party at the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house in Hyde Park, The New York Times reported. On Sunday’s Meet the Press, Kristen Welker asked the Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, whether he could set the record straight on allegations that his family has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. When she followed up to confirm that neither he nor his family had any ties to the group, wrote on June 24, 2012, as the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi was taking power in Egypt, that “my family has long been MB.” The same day, she wrote about an amazing talk with their mother about their mother’s activism in the Muslim Brotherhood during college in the early...

While Pope Leo's lung cancer diagnosis may have come as a shock to Catholics this week, the prognosis is likely a lot less scary. The cancer, adenocarcinoma, is a common one, and while worrisome if caught late, has a track record of high rates of survival with early intervention. "The fact that surgery was the first tool that they utilized is a really good sign," says Dr. Vin Gupta, a pulmonologist and board member of the American Lung Association. "It suggests that they think this is early stage." Leo underwent surgery in Rome on Tuesday, which he announced over the...

A sickle to the back! Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s allies are publicly breaking with him over his handpicked police commissioner — and Hizzoner is livid that the socialist House candidate he went out on a limb to endorse is leading the charge. City Hall staffers have been openly whining about alleged ally Darializa Avila Chevalier — whom Mamdani endorsed just a few months ago during the primaries — after she led a crusade to slam NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch after ICE agents shot an illegal migrant in the Bronx. “They were pissed about what she did on social media and her...

The workforce at Samsung Electronics' Austin campus, the company's US foundry hub, has fallen by more than 30 percent as losses in its non-memory business continued to weigh on the existing production site. The company is working toward launching the Taylor factory by the end of this year... The report shows the Austin campus employed 3,342 workers last year, down 32 percent from 4,907 in 2024. JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citibank, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, Capital One, PNC, TD Bank, and BMO Bank were found to have discriminated against American consumers, citing “reputation risk” as a...

I love this. I hate that. Really? Is it necessary to exaggerate? If everything is huge or outrageous or unprecedented, then how will we express things that are truly out of the ordinary? Florid language is the enemy of clear, concise speech. Like putting exclamation points and emojis after every sentence, it pervades modern media and makes everyone sound like adolescent twits. I don't dislike the following expressions, nor do I hate them. I detest them with a burning rage that disrupts the very fabric of space and time. - Amazing/Amazed: People say this when they really like something, but...

They expect to launch the agenda in the first 100...
