Divided Supreme Court rules White House ballroom construction may proceed
The Hill ^ | 8/31/26

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 on Monday that construction of the White House ballroom can continue, lifting a block on above-ground work as President Trump asserts the project is necessary for national security.

It halts a lower court ruling that would’ve restricted construction until Congress provided additional approvals.

Five of the court’s conservative justices, including all three of Trump’s appointees — Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett — sided with the president. They ruled a preservationist group likely has no right to sue over one of its members’ concerns about the project. Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s three liberal justices in dissent.

“This Court has not found standing in circumstances like these before,” the court’s unsigned opinion reads. “To the contrary, we have repeatedly held that mere offense, disagreement, or distaste does not qualify.”

It is not a final decision on the legality of the ballroom, and the case could ultimately return to the Supreme Court. But in the meantime, construction may proceed unimpeded. A 250-person crew is working on the ballroom 20 hours a day, seven days a week, court records indicate.

““In failing to appreciate as much, the Court misconceives the plaintiff’s injury, allowing the Executive’s likely infringement of the Legislature’s power of the purse and authority to regulate federal property in the District of Columbia to continue,” Roberts wrote. “Today’s decision is no victory for the separation of powers.”

He was joined by all three justices appointed by Democratic presidents, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson

“The White House is not just any building,” the chief justice emphasized.”

And the left insists that Justice Roberts’ is “in Trump’s pocket”. Harumph! I beg to differ!

The left has had an unhealthy obsession with the ballroom. They act like Trump’s the first president to do any remodeling of the WH.

Get it done before a judge can have it torn down.

You can look in vain for any criticisms by the left or their loyal media in regards to Obama’s WH construction.

Roberts should be shipped to N. Korea where he would fit right in.

“a preservationist group”

preserving what, exactly?

It’s a municipal building that has had endless remodels and redos in it’s history.

I am flabbergasted that this is even an issue. Presidents have added and revised features of the White House throughout our Country’s history. The ballroom is paid for by donations. The security aspect, which is extensive, was requested by SS and the protective arm. After 3 assasination attempts, Charlie Kirk etc the security needs trump and discussion of one wwoman’s esthetics. I blame John Roberts who is a disgrace to his office. His political obsessions are causing him to neglect supervision and direction of the lower courts.

I am shocked by Amy Conehead Barrett’s vote! Maybe her pigtails are too tight?

It's amazing how every leftist asshat group has standing to sue, but every conservative group or business gets denied standing.

Apparently the primary role of the Federal judiciary is to act as a ratchet to make sure the national steering wheel turns only to the left.
