The Pentagon revised a religious classification list after pushback from Utah lawmakers, but questions remain about why The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was left off the list of Christian religions in the first place. BYU religious historian Joseph Stuart said the answer lies in a debate that has been going on for nearly 200 years. After Sen. Mike Lee shared a post online asking if anyone could explain why the Pentagon removed the LDS faith from its list of Christian religions, Stuart said, “The discussion that I would have hoped to have had is to say, ‘You...

Bishop Schneider: ‘Remarkable number’ of Church leaders have ‘lost the faith’The fruits of the loss of faith among clergy are a ‘tremendous general confusion, obfuscation, darkness regarding doctrine, morals, and liturgy,’ Bishop Athanasius Schneider said. Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Astana, Kazakhstan, said that a “remarkable number of high-ranking clergy” have “lost the Catholic faith.”“They want another Church: half-Protestant Church, half worldly, adapted to the impression of the world,” Schneider told Catholic writer and podcaster Matt Gaspers during a larger discussion about the Second Vatican Council and the Society of St. Pius X.“There are a remarkable number of them over the...

The origins of the Roman Catholic Church are not found in Peter preaching at Pentecost, Paul writing to the churches, or the apostles planting local assemblies under the authority of Jesus Christ. The New Testament church began in the first century as a spiritual body of born-again believers saved by grace through faith. The Roman Catholic system, as a centralized, hierarchical, sacramental, state-favored religious institution, began taking recognizable shape in the 4th century, when professing Christianity was forcibly joined to the power structure of the Roman Empire in what can only be described as a hostile corporate takeover. Cue the...

As its national influence has risen, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has simultaneously grown more extreme. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the group’s “Red Rabbits” initiative. The Red Rabbits Security Commission, a subgroup within the DSA focused on “community defense” efforts, is, according to its authorizing resolution, preparing for a “national uprising against federal agents and police brutality.” In practice, that means training cadres in tactics like armed and unarmed self-defense, blocking intersections, and fighting “fascists” with umbrellas. A recent panel offered an unprecedented window into what the project looks like. Organizers from Minnesota, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia,...

The US House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to pass the reconciliation bill to fund ICE and CBP, more than a week after President Trump’s June 1 deadline. The $70 billion bill will fund the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration functions for the remainder of Trump’s term. This comes after a contentious vote in the Senate amid tensions over Trump’s $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund and White House Ballroom funding. Some Republicans reportedly expressed concerns because the bill does not prevent Trump from restoring his anti-weaponization fund to compensate victims of Biden-era lawfare. Other attempts were made to block the construction...

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s latest strikes on Lebanon and Iran have made clear that U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who started the war in lockstep, want different things.Trump had publicly warned Israel not to strike Beirut in its war with Iran-backed Hezbollah militants. Its critics had thought it dead, but suddenly there was revived support for the SAVE America Act in the U.S. Senate and the idea of securing America’s elections appears to be back. The plan, sought by a majority of Americans and President Donald Trump, would require identification and verification in order for people to vote in American elections, an idea that seems reasonable. However, critics have claimed it would prevent married women and others from voting. Now it has happened during a Senate “vote-a-rama” to advance the GOP’s $70 billion immigration enforcement package. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, had an amendment...

A mix of restaurants, cultural institutions and high-rise residential living makes Midtown Atlanta one of the city’s most attractive neighborhoods. Lately, however, a series of violent incidents has shaken residents and left many wondering if city officials can keep us safe. In April, I was standing outside my apartment when I heard gunshots ring out in Piedmont Park. A rowdy, unauthorized gathering of teenagers had turned deadly. A 16-year-old girl was killed by a stray bullet. A few months earlier, I was in a restaurant on a Sunday afternoon when a large man brutally attacked a server. I helped pull...
