The origins of the Roman Catholic Church are not found in Peter preaching at Pentecost, Paul writing to the churches, or the apostles planting local assemblies under the authority of Jesus Christ. The New Testament church began in the first century as a spiritual body of born-again believers saved by grace through faith. The Roman Catholic system, as a centralized, hierarchical, sacramental, state-favored religious institution, began taking recognizable shape in the 4th century, when professing Christianity was forcibly joined to the power structure of the Roman Empire in what can only be described as a hostile corporate takeover. Cue the woman riding on the Beast.

It’d put the start more on 5th century Leo the Great making his position as the bishop of Rome as greater than the other bishops.
This thread has potential.
4th Century is about right. it was the Donatist schism the set the foundation for the RCC. All you have to do is have enough sympathetic votes, and you can nullify Scripture.
Catholic Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, was a profoundly devout Christian, though the specific term “Catholic” was not in use the early 4th century.
She is recognized as a saint in the Catholic Church and other traditions for her intense piety, significant charity work, and pivotal role in promoting Christianity.
You could look at it that way, or you could think of it as an opportunity to learn something called “truth”.
It’s your choice.
What we know of theology and worship of the Church in the first and second centuries is consistent with Scripture and Catholic traditions through the years and to the present day.
What a bunch of revisionist malarkey. By the time, Constantine was emperor, the Catholic Church had already had 32 recognize popes. Please, educate yourself.
Read the early Church Fathers. The Church was Catholic 300 years before Constantine.
Yes, the potential to turn into a flame war.

Thanks Liz! I’d add that Evelyn Waugh’s novel “Helena” is a very moving retelling of Helena’s life and eventual search for the True Cross. Her early days as the daughter of Old King Cole and her instruction by a servant in the Christian faith are fascinating.
Evelyn Waugh is one of my favorite authors.......
glad to have the St Helena reference on the thread.
Roman Catholicism began AD 325. Who doesn’t know that?
Talk about whatever your faith might be, OY. Catholics can already talk about Catholics and Catholicism pretty well, without you telling them about themselves, to their face.
Nah! You will be hearing some revisionist history from some Early Church Fathers that have been accurately quoted by an ace reporter and any troubling spots have been smoothed out over the centuries.
The Christian church did not have a rigid hierarchical structure until Constantine’s financial and regulatory capture of the church. Christendom consisted of a number of Bishoprics around Asia, North Africa, and Europe. They were united by the Apostles’ doctrine. Many bishops took the pope title meaning “father”. It was not Pontifix Maximus like today.
