JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s latest strikes on Lebanon and Iran have made clear that U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who started the war in lockstep, want different things.
Trump had publicly warned Israel not to strike Beirut in its war with Iran-backed Hezbollah militants. When it did, on Sunday, Iran responded by firing ballistic missiles at Israel for the first time since the April ceasefire. Israel then struck Iran, with which Trump has been engaged in weeks of high-stakes negotiations.
The fighting has since died down, but the differences between the two leaders are likely to persist.
That’s because Trump, whose party faces elections later this year, wants to wind down an unpopular war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to ease gas prices. Iran says a full ceasefire in Lebanon is key to any deal.
Netanyahu, who also faces elections this year, is under pressure to stop Hezbollah’s attacks and prove that he is winning the war with Iran and its allies. He also needs to manage relations with Israel’s most important ally without appearing to kowtow to it.
Political considerations push in opposite directions
When the United States and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28, the allies appeared shoulder to shoulder.
Netanyahu said the goal was to degrade the Islamic Republic’s military, eradicate its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and topple its government. Trump announced the death of Iran’s supreme leader in the opening barrage and urged Iranians to “take back” their country.

“This war” started with the occupation of the American embassy in Tehran.
As reported by “AAMER MADHANI”
Stopped reading.
Israel wants to win. Trump is trying not to lose.
What the world needs to understand is that Netanyahu reducing the US to a mere
pawn in its plans reaps untold political benefits for the calculating Netantyahu.
Israel has engaged in direct military strikes against
Iran, in brazen defiance of US requests for restraint.
Pres Trump sap-happily announced for public consumption,
that he was the one “calling the shots” in the Mideast.
Netanyahu no doubt said, “That’s what he thinks,”
and proceeded with his own plans to attack.
Israel conducted air strikes in Iran (Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz) targeting Iranian air defenses. Israeli
military hit a petrochemical complex in Mahshahr, telling the world it was used for “missile production.”
Insider Israeli officials continue to defy Trump, suggesting
their bombing campaign could last for “several da y s.”
Will the world applaud Netanyahu reducing the US to a mere pawn in its plans?
Who knows?......the calculated Netanyahu knows he reaps untold political benefits for his actions.
Some might say it started with the 1953 CIA coup that installed the Shah.
Is this the FOURTH article on the exact same subject?
My Mother In Law repeats herself multiple times per day, but she has an excuse, she’s 88.
How old are you?
I've believed that for decades. Recently, however, I'm wondering if the blaming of the 1950's CIA over Iran is just more of the same ol' blame-America-for-everything-under-the-sun that we've been told since the 1970s.
“Some might say it started with the 1953 CIA coup that installed the Shah.”
That CIA coup was a plus +++ You would have preferred the communist stooge Mosaddegh. Dummy.
Iran declared war on America and Israel, every day for 45 years. They funded hundreds of non state terror groups to fight their 45 year war of terror. We just got tired of it.
Some might say it started with Mad Mo.
The cia did engineer the 1953 coup. as well President Jimmy Carter engineered the return of the Mullah Aytolla Khommeni to Iran from france in 1979. Carter was a total idiot. He believed that Khommeni was a religious soul who would bring peace and stability. Khommeni pulled a vast bait and switch.
Recently, however, I’m wondering if the blaming of the 1950’s CIA over Iran is just more of the same ol’ blame-America-for-everything-under-the-sun that we’ve been told since the 1970s.
_______
Look at a map. Iran is 800 miles from Russia via the Caspian. Russia was becoming too involved there during the Cold War. Iran had a strong communist party. So the CIA did good by getting rid of Mohammad Mosaddegh and installing the Shah.
We wanted Iran in our orbit. Not the Soviet Union’s.
The America Lasters are out in force.
"And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it." - Zechariah 12:3
Zechariah 12:3 seems to say a time will come when nations who involve themselves with Israel will get hurt.
Contrast this with Genesis 12:3, where God speaks to Abraham, saying: "I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
Authors JULIA FRANKEL and AAMER MADHANI; a Jew and a Muslim; a rare two ball combination. But the sort of thing that one can expect from AP.
> Israel wants to win. Trump is trying not to lose. <
Insightful. Unfortunately for Israel, a real win (no more Iranian nuclear material) would take many American ground troops. And that ain’t gonna happen.
So now comes the maneuvering. Trying to get the best deal possible. Trying not to lose (or to appear to lose).
Hey, Dummy. Do you even know how to read?
Because you're changing the subject.
The issue was: When did "this war" with Iran begin? Who started it?
One poster claimed it was when Iran attacked the American embassy in 1979. I observed it began when the CIA overthrew Iran's government in 1953.
You cannot negotiate peace with people that want to kill your children.
