Firefighters battling the Dixie Fire have also been facing a second enemy: a serial arsonist who went on a spree of setting fires in July and August — and who sought to trap fire crews with his fires, according to agents from the U.S. Forest Service. They allege former college professor Gary Maynard is the culprit, citing their tracking of his movements and other evidence. "Where Maynard went, fires started. Not just once, but over and over again," the government said in a court memorandum arguing for Maynard to be denied bail.

As a retiree from high school teaching in NYC, we have Medicare (80%) and supplemental insurance (20%). Effective Jan. 1, our insurance will be NYC Medicare Advantage Plus Plan and will be administered by Emblem Health and by Blue Shield, not by the troika of Medicare, Emblem Health, and Blue Shield as is presently the case. All medical bills will go to the new plan. The plan in turn will pay the doctors and hospital. There is a $253 deductible for each person and a $300 deductible for hospital admission. My experience is that we are already moving toward Medicare...

Far too many scientists have been afraid to test climate doomsday narratives. Last week, a group of scientists sent shock waves through the climate-science community. They boldly pointed out that current climate models exaggerate greenhouse warming. In other words, they confirmed what climate skeptics have been arguing all along: that most computer climate models forecast unrealistic warming -- warming not observed anywhere in the real world. Could this be a turning point for climate science? Has the hitherto staunch resistance to any kind of scrutiny regarding the dangerous warming narrative come to an end? Scientific MethodScience is not a body...

Aug. 12—Lansing — Riding a wave of frustration focused on the last election, Kristina Karamo and Matthew DePerno have risen, in a matter of months, to become contenders for top Republican spots on Michigan's ballot in 2022. Karamo, an Oak Park educator who hopes to be the GOP nominee for secretary of state next year, and DePerno, a Kalamazoo lawyer who is seeking the nomination for attorney general, gained prominence by contending there was fraud in Democrat Joe Biden's presidential victory over Republican Donald Trump in Michigan. Their campaigns are poised to test how closely state Republicans are holding to...

Vermont Democrat Party chair Bruce Olsson published a commentary recently proclaiming yet again that Republicans are "racist." This is particularly rich since the Democrat party is the oldest and most enduring racist political party in history, and its racism continues to this day. Here are the facts: The Democrat Party was founded in 1828. Its first national party platform, ratified during the 1840 Presidential election, stated: “ that all efforts by abolitionists or others, made to induce congress to interfere with questions of slavery… are calculated to lead to the most alarming and dangerous consequences, and that all such efforts...

The sendoff of fallen Chicago police Officer Ella French was reportedly rushed by the department’s No. 2 official – and former Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy argued it reflected a nationwide lack of support for police officers from government leaders. "The officers here in CPD and probably across the country … feel under attack by politicians and the public," McCarthy said Wednesday during an appearance on Fox News' "The Story." "Most of them feel like they’re not being supported by their leadership." "We’re not waiting on the bagpipes" because "we don’t have 20 minutes for this s---," Chicago First Deputy...

I’ve often wondered about the GOP’s history of aligning with the interests of business owners with their desire for cheap labor (usually fulfilled by legal/illegal aliens). My parents told me that when they came here from Greece in 1968 (legally), the plan was to work a few years, save a lot of money, then head back to Greece. They changed their mind and decided that there were better opportunities in the US and applied for citizenship. Did the GOP assume that is what most immigrants (legal or not) would do…at least back in the 60s and 70s? I find it...

The Biden administration and Democratic congressional leaders are pushing back on Republican lawmakers who have said Democrats will have to go it alone on raising or suspending the debt ceiling. President Biden said Wednesday that he is not worried about the debt ceiling and pointed out that the national debt rose dramatically under the previous administration when Republicans were in power. "They're not going to let us default," Mr. Biden said in response to a question on the debt ceiling. "$8 trillion of that is on the Republican conscience." The suspension of the limit for how much the United States...
