Newberg school board votes to ban BLM, Pride flags and signs in district buildings (Oregon)

NEWBERG, Ore. - Nearly 5,000 kids attend Newberg-area schools. As one parent points out, not all of them feel safe.

"Black students and other kids of color are under attack in Newberg schools," parent Tai Harden-Moore said. "I know this to be true because my son was called a n----- at school."

During a virtual meeting Tuesday night, Harden-Moore explained to the Newberg school board that a Black Lives Matter sign in a classroom can go a long way in helping her son feel safe. The same can be said about the Pride flag for students who identify as LGBTQ.

"Research shows an affirming school environment improves behavioral, academic and mental health outcomes for all students," said Caitlin Collins, wife of a Newberg teacher.

Not everybody is buying that. Some testified that BLM and Pride flags have no place in the classroom.

"The BLM and LGBTQ ideology and curriculum are shattering the innocence of children, promoting racial divide and negatively impacting the lives of our children forever," one woman said.

School board director and vice chair Brian Shannon shares that sentiment. He asked his fellow board members to not only ban Black Lives Matter and Pride flags and signs from district buildings, but also ban teachers from wearing BLM and Pride clothing while at work.

"The main goal of this is to get political symbols and divisive symbols out of our schools so we can focus on the already difficult task of educating our students in the core subjects," Shannon said.

Well I agree with the decision. But it may or may not pass First Amendment muster.

Oregon?? Really? Where is this school district located? I guess it isn’t a suburb of Portland!

That " affirmation" research money and time would have better been spent on determining which flavor of gum is most likely to be put under a school desk. At least the evidence would have been much harder to argue about then that "affirmation makes better students " research. .

Gobblety-gook! The mother who claims her son was called a N-— needs to teach her son a few important lessons.

1. names can’t hurt you.
2. stand your ground.
3. defend yourself.

This stuff should be settled on the playground before these kids reach HS. Otherwise your just papering over the problems.

“Well I agree with the decision. But it may or may not pass First Amendment muster.”

Doesn’t matter, it’ll be ignored by the teachers and others. Short of 24/7 cameras in classrooms, they schools will DO AS THEY PLEASE, regardless of what people who think they’re overseeing them want.

We might as well get used to it. The schools are composed of people (at all levels) who want CRT...and so they WILL have CRT.

Newberg is in the Willamette Valley, southwest of Portland. It’s not a suburb, but not too far away, maybe 30 miles from downtown.

“Newberg is in the Willamette Valley, southwest of Portland. It’s not a suburb, but not too far away, maybe 30 miles from downtown.”

A little background on this.

1) The local High School has been flying homosexual flags and BLM flags. These flags draped all over the outside of a school are an embarrassment.

2) the previous school board approved this message.

3) Local Republicans(I’m one of them) knocked 2 liberals off the school board and replaced them with conservatives. The vote was 4-3 to end support for BLM and Gay pride groups.

4) There’re still 3 democrats on the school board who need to be replaced.

The county last voted democrat in 1964 when Goldwater got crushed.

Thanks for the info. I was born and raised in Oregon, but moved away in 1985, after 30 years mostly in the Willamette Valley. I worked all over the state, and know that a great deal of Oregon is nothing like Portland. Glad that Newberg’s school board is pushing back against the lunacy.

And the Albany School Board (south of Salem) with 3 newly elected board members just Fired the Superintendent who was a BLM pusher from what I understand. Oregon is NOT Portland.

And if you don't like it, they'll call you a racist and start a social media campaign that gets you fired from your job.

These people play for keeps.

First amendment has nothing to do with some random creep flying the flag of a terrorist organization (BLM) on someone else’s building.

Yeah?
Try it and see what happens to ya.

Short of 24/7 cameras in classrooms, they schools will DO AS THEY PLEASE, regardless of what people who think they're overseeing them want.

1. 24/7 cameras are everywhere, especially schools and public institutions
2. I'd love it for you to try the good ole “ I'll do what I please irrespective of the law” and see where that gets ya.

How are them lawless Texas Dem state congressmen doing right now?
