U.S. military shot down Iranian drones tonight, U.S. official says

A U.S. official says the U.S. military shot down two Iranian drones that were trying to strike commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz tonight.

“It appears Iran has attempted to strike commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz tonight. U.S. forces shot down two Iranian one-way attack drones. Traffic flow through the Strait continues,” the official said.

The attack occurred after Trump spoke about being close to a deal with Iran this afternoon.

Trump’s doing a kind of siege. Iran’s bread and butter is oil exports. That’s down 90%, with whatever sales though tanker trucks that cost $25 per barrel vs $5 via supertankers that are now off-limits because of the US blockade and seizure. The idea with a siege is the defender gets weaker and weaker as his resources run out. It takes patience and, in Trump’s case, a willingness to brave sustained political attack by a media all too happy to frame this as an American defeat.

Trump has never been shy about initiating attacks on Iran. Soleimani (#2 guy then) and Khamenei (#1) are dead. No other president would have authorized these operations. Reagan, with a 49 state, 19% victory, the Tehran Embassy hostage and Marine barracks and Beirut Embassy massacres in the recent past, balked at striking Iran proper.

It’s a siege. Iran’s oil exports are down 90%, with tanker trucks costing $20 more per barrel than supertankers to transport largely eating up the war-related price increase. At best, with 10% of prewar volumes and the price hike, Iran is scoring 20% of prewar profits, even with generous (i.e. minimal) assumptions about what smugglers charge to circumvent sanctions. Since most Iranian income is through oil exports, hyperinflation is coming.

Why not require until Iranian leadership shows up on camera and definitively state publicly they are signing the deal will we stop the bombing? They have played Lucy and the football with Trump 3 times already where he announces we have a deal and within 24 hours they say they do not. Enough cat and mouse.
