US officials downplay text of the Iran agreement, saying it doesn’t account for back-channel commitments

US negotiators are working to quickly release the text of the agreement between Washington and Tehran, even as they downplay the significance of the specific language in the document, US officials told CNN.

The officials described the text of the agreement as incredibly vague, mainly intended to create a more favorable environment for the highly technical, in-person talks to come. They added that the framework is aimed at providing Iran the ability to sell it politically to their internal audience.

Additionally, the officials said that the text of the memorandum of understanding — which Vice President JD Vance told CNN Monday is one-and-a-half pages long — didn't reflect critical back-channel commitments Iran has made to the US, which they argued gave them more confidence in signing on to the arrangement.

"People shouldn't read too much into the language of the MOU," one of the officials said, describing the agreement as a "political document."

Yeah, no attributions.

But vague is typical for a MOU. Expected.

But I hope they know the "back channel commitments" aren't worth spit.

So, they don’t have it in writing. Just vague oral assurances. They are getting played so hard.

Overt actions on their part must precede any back channel commitments on our part. They are dealing with creatures that have severely diminished human characteristics.

In this case, it's an outline for present and future negotiations...with general principles stated and the "how to" proceed.

80% of the US public opposes the Iran war, and midterms are approaching.

Any questions?

“The text of the agreement does not describe in specific detail what commitments Iran has made on its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, according to a person who saw the text and described it to CNN, even though Trump and other officials have insisted the US will oversee its destruction. Instead, the agreement states in broad terms that Iran “reiterates that it will never produce nuclear weapons,” a commitment Tehran also made in the 2015 nuclear deal with the Obama administration.

However, US officials argued that Iran has “backchanneled” to the US that they will offer the concessions the Trump administration is looking for. That includes US involvement in the destruction of the enriched materials on site in coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency. The officials said such a concession is not stated explicitly in the document.”

Yeah, that’ll work./s

didn't reflect critical back-channel commitments Iran has made to the US,

What a bunch of BS. So now they're trying to spin this as merely a "political document" to give the supposed Iranian moderates cover, and we are NOT to believe the written next on it?

Absurd.

Vance stepped in it big time. I listened to what he said and he specifically said the Gulf States will pay $300 billion. The MOU does not say that nor describe any steps Iran must meet to get the money. Worse if this 14 point plan is the real deal Iran took Vance and his negotiating team to the cleaners. Not one of the 14 points benefits the USA. Iran got everything it wanted. How about $300 billion from Qatar to reimburse the allies. For this trash we kicked our only ally in the balls. If this is how we treat our friends nobody should ever trust the USA again. Good luck in the midterms between Thune and this surrender I will be sitting out this election cycle. If Vance is on the ticket I will be sitting out the next one. Don't give me that garbage about not voting is a vote for the democrats. There is not hairs width difference between any of them.

Trump is channeling Nancy Pelosi.

We’ve got to sign the MOU before we can know what’s in it.

If that is accurate, Trump has promised to immediately stop Israel from defending itself from Hezbollah and to provide Iran with at least $300 billion to rebuild.

The agreement says doesn’t say Iran gets to toll the strait, it just says Iran will “take steps” regarding the transit of merchant ships, not what these steps will entail.

The Trump-Iran deal will not prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and will do little, if anything, about Iran’s ballistic missile programs and material support to terrorist proxies.

Again, if this is accurate, Iran got everything it wanted, including driving a wedge between the U.S. and Israel.

Iran is playing Trump; and Trump is playing Iran.

The important thing right now is to prevent Iran from taking complete control of Congress by electing 8 or 10 more democrats in the mid-terms.

If Trump wins the mid-terms he has lots of options for dealing with Iran.
