A lawsuit filed by Union City charges that the landlord of two apartment buildings has repeatedly failed to address complaints by tenants and orders by the city on issues ranging from moldy bathrooms to fire hazards. Landlord-tenant disputes are nothing new, even those with municipalities entering the fray. Except in this case, city officials say the landlord is Feisal Abdul Rauf, the imam behind the controversial proposal to develop an Islamic cultural center and mosque near Ground Zero. The suit, filed today in state Superior Court in Jersey City, identifies Rauf as the sole officer of Sage Development LLC, a...

I recently went to Delaware to check in on the hotly contested Republican primary. Battling it out for Joe Biden’s old Senate seat are two-time Governor and now Congressman Mike Castle and Sarah Palin endorsed, tea party backed candidate Christine O’Donnell. I’ve never seen a more bitterly divided primary. Republican leaders say an O’Donnell victory would destroy the state party and pretty much ruin any GOP chances of capturing Biden’s old seat. “I have no doubt if she by some miracle became the nominee she would lose the seat by unprecedented numbers,” the Chairman of the Delaware Republican Party, Tom...

In 1966, Stephen Hawking published his first — completely valid — proof for the existence of God. Over the next seven years, he followed this with even more powerful valid theorems proving God’s existence. So how did Hawking, who successfully proved God’s existence, remain an atheist? Simple. He simply denied that the assumptions he used in his proofs were true. As a matter of logic, if the assumptions in a proof are not true, then the conclusions need not be true. What assumptions did the young Hawking make? He assumed that the laws of physics, mainly Einstein’s theory of gravity,...

The primary season is ending as it began, with the Republican establishment on one side in state after state, and tea party activists on another. The competition is particularly strong in Delaware and New Hampshire, where GOP senatorial nominations are the prize, and New York, where Republicans pick a challenger for an uphill fall campaign for governor. Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Maryland also hold primaries Tuesday, along with the District of Columbia. Among incumbents, veteran Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel of New York and Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty face particularly stiff challenges -- one because of ethics charges in Congress,...

A Centralia man being held in connection with a weekend stabbing in Wamac has been released from custody without being charged pending further investigation. Marion County State's Attorney Matt Wilzbach says witness statements indicate the man was acting in self defense, but he wants police to talk to the stabbing victim before a final decision is made on charges. Wilzbach has been told 36-year-old Christopher Walker of Patoka remains in the intensive care unit of St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia on a respirator, but his condition is stable. However, Walker's condition is not good enough to allow him to talk...

Wild gyrations on Wall Street have made U.S investors leery of buying individual stocks and skeptical that the market is a fair place to park their money. In an Associated Press-CNBC poll of investors, 61 percent said the market's recent volatility has made them less confident about buying and selling individual stocks. And the majority of those surveyed — 55 percent — said the market is fair only to some investors. The survey confirms that average investors have been growing more concerned about the stock market as a safe place to invest for retirement. And news about the market has...

You know what? I'm not going to wait for them to call the game. I know how this ends, you know how this ends, so why not just call it ourselves and beat the traffic home? The Obama administration is over. Done. Failed.(I'm not saying he can't get up to more mischief, or that the Republicans are victorious -- I'm a realist: I think it's possible, even probable, that we live in complicated world where there doesn't need to be a winner, where everyone can lose.)But here are three signs that he's over and out:1. He's worried about his base. The...

Liberals running interference for Islam while bashing Christianity and Judiasm, can see the results of their Sharia friendly liberal judge activism in the New Jersey case of “S.D. v. M.J.R. (N.J. Super. Ct. App. Div.)” In this recent case, a judge declared Rape acceptable because of Muslim cultural traditions. The Quran gives husbands supreme authority over a woman.

Kathleen Sebelius' chilling, Orwellian order that insurers not blame ObamaCare for rising rates was just the start. We must stop the re-education in November After Congress passed ObamaCare, senior Democratic leaders predicted that public opposition would fade and voters would reward congressional supporters in the November elections. However, the exact opposite has occurred. Opinion polls show that ObamaCare remains deeply unpopular with the American people, because it will limit their freedoms, reduce their access to quality medical care, and raise their health care costs.Democratic congressional candidates now regard health care as toxic for their re-election chances. Those who had voted...

With the future of Harley-Davidson Inc.'s Wisconsin factories at stake, union workers in the Milwaukee area and Tomahawk on Monday ratified a seven-year labor contract that's likely to result in hundreds of job cuts the company says are needed to keep production in the state where it was born. "I am too young to retire and too old to start over," said Harley assembler Jill Huffman, summing up a pervasive feeling of uncertainty among many Harley employees who voted on the contract Monday at the Waukesha County Expo Center. United Steelworkers of America Local 2-209 accepted the concessions-filled agreement, which...

Just Imagine Today's Scripture " No one can know a person's thoughts except that person's own spirit, and no one can know God's thoughts except God's own Spirit" (Ephesians 3:20, NIV). Today's Word from Joel and Victoria When was the last time you imagined God doing something supernatural in your life? Is there a relationship that needs restoration? Is there a business you've wanted to start, but you are holding back? If there were no limitations on your life, if anything were possible, what would you be willing to imagine? Friend, the only limits on your life are the...

Yesterday, White House sources confirmed that President Obama will deliver another back-to-school address aimed at all of the nation’s children. That’s right, the president will make September 14 the second-annual Obama Day at your local school! You might recall last year’s Obama Day, for which the U.S. Department of Education put out teaching guides that gave parents across the country reasonable cause to fear a day of liberal politics and celebrating President Obama. You might also remember the divisive national uproar that precipitated, which ultimately culminated in a relatively staid — but nonetheless campaign-esque — speech, not to mention a...

Arguments or Obedience ". . . the simplicity that is in Christ" —2 Corinthians 11:3 Simplicity is the secret to seeing things clearly. A saint does not think clearly until a long time passes, but a saint ought to see clearly without any difficulty. You cannot think through spiritual confusion to make things clear; to make things clear, you must obey. In intellectual matters you can think things out, but in spiritual matters you will only think yourself into further wandering thoughts and more confusion. If there is something in your life upon which God has put His pressure,...

In his latest NYT op-ed, Paul Krugman takes a break from worrying about the GOP and spending to return to another one of his big issues -- Chinese currency manipulation. Japan's leaders, he notes, have rightfully been concerned about Chinese debt buying, and the effect that has on pushing up the yen (thus killing exports), and he wonders why we can't get the same level of outrage here. Basically, there are two reasons why American leaders are too scared to slap a tariff on China and penalize them for this kind of manipulation. The first is that they're worried China...

Workers at the Hohhot Air Traffic Management Bureau observed with instruments an unidentified flying object (UFO) 40 kilometers east of Baotou, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region at 8 p.m. on Sept. 11. "The airport received a notice from the Hohhot Air Traffic Management Bureau about the appearance of an UFO. To guarantee security, the aircraft heading for the airport had to land at secondary airports. Otherwise, it may have led to collisions," said Ms. Luo, from the Baotou Airport.

Republicans in the U.S. Senate poured cold water on Monday on hopes for a compromise with President Barack Obama that would have allowed Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans to expire. Taxes have become a flashpoint going into a November 2 election in which Republicans are seeking to wrest control of Congress from the president's fellow Democrats. Obama says the cost of keeping the tax cuts for the rich is too high as the United States emerges from recession with a massive budget deficit.
